Still Great, 2 Feb 2006
When it was released, Quake III had one of, if not, the best graphics engines around. Because of that, it still stands up against some of the latest FPS offerings. As a First Person Shooter (FPS) it is immensely playable and with varying difficulty it is a great place to begin your FPS playing experience. The game’s AI is spectacular; although on Nightmare mode the AI controlled characters have an uncanny ability to pick you out in a crowded room. However, far from taking away from the game, this makes you want to play even more – just for vengeance. What is necessary for revenge? Some top class weaponry – that’s what. And this is one department where Quake III, definitely, does not hold back. With Lightening Guns and Rocket Launchers at your disposal there are just so many ways to humiliate your opponents. With two basic modes – the normal game and skirmish – there is enough game play here to keep you going for weeks. Watch as your stats increase as you play your way through the normal game, or choose your opponents, time limit and frag limit in skirmish mode for pure melee action. One thing’s for sure – it’s kill or be killed. If you can drag yourself away from the excitement of the main game there’s plenty more fun when you take Quake III online to compete against other players. This brings another element to the game as you begin to take great satisfaction in every frag. Quake III Gold is one of those games that quite simply, you have to own. Despite there being games out now with better physics, AI etc. you can always be sure that Quake III will give you a great gaming experience. And as an older game it will run on most PCs and Macs.
