Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The game of the film, which is based on the book, The Sum of all Fears is another Tom Clancy tactical first-person shooter akin to Rainbow Six. You lead a crack team of FBI hostage rescue agents, performing good deeds at the behest of Uncle Sam. You start out rescuing a news team from a ragged band of hillbilly militiamen, but soon your team has been seconded to the CIA, and from here on in you get to shoot Neo-Nazi terrorists in a wide variety of different countries.

Plot hokum aside, this is a very good game. The visuals are strong, with gorgeous textures showing off the Ghost Recon engine to superb effect. The missions take place indoors, and every location has a very clearly defined identity. The result is palpable tension whilst creeping around trying not to set off alarms or be shot, whether you're in a warehouse or Viennese private bank. This is heightened by the exquisite sound: the effects really show off an EAX card, while the music does an excellent job of scene-setting. Weaponry is well modelled, and while you don't have the ability to pick and choose your shooter of choice, the pre-defined loadouts offered should prove more than adequate.

You also have the choice of difficulty settings for the campaign, and while the easy settings don't provide a challenge, realistic--with auto-aim and in-game saves switched off--means you'll usually finish a mission surrounded by the bodies of your team-mates as well as terrorists.

For those new to this type of game, the tutorial is excellent, and here you are introduced to the effective yet simple squad-level commands. While the squad commands are adequate for the single player campaign, those looking for pinpoint control will be disappointed, and they aren't really good enough for the excellent multi-player game, where a voice-comms package really shows it's worth.

The Sum of all Fears is only let down by a single-player campaign that's far too short, but balanced by a very well implemented multi-player experience. --Jonathan Keith

5.0 out of 5 stars More fantastic Rainbow Six-style action!, 9 Jul 2002
Having almost completed this game (a gift from someone in the US where it was released earlier to coincide with the film's cinema release) I have to say it's fantastic.

The storyline walks a sort of "middle line" between the book and the film, incorporating the best elements of both. The missions woven into this storyline are extremely exciting.

If you've played any of the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear games, you'll feel right at home. But be prepared for much better graphics as this game uses an adapted version of the Ghost Recon engine, which makes it look lovely - although the Unreal-engined Rainbow Six: Raven Shield should make it look even better.

If you've never played any of the above games, don't worry. There are plenty of helpful options that ease you into the action and when you've finished this off you should feel confident to progress onto one of those other titles.

And as for finishing the game, it's not all over! Once missions are complete in the campaign they become available in "Quick Mission" mode where you use the map but with different objectives and enemy placements. For instance there are modes where you must hunt down and kill all the terrorists on the map, another where you simply must get from point A to point B, avoiding or killing any terrorist you come across.

And on top of all that is the multiplayer! Come on, at this price you can't go wrong!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ghost Recon was far better, 16 Aug 2002
I loved Ghost Recon as both a single player and multiplayer game, and so I was eagerly anticipating this game.

In principal the designers had a nice idea. They took the Ghost Recon game engine and tried to integrate some of the nice features of the original Rainbow Six games i.e. being able to change the ROE of your team in game and being able to order your team to frag/flashbang and clear out a room.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite work as well as they planned. After some experimentation with the game I have found myself making absolutely no use of these extra features, as to do so ultimately ends up in my team getting slaughtered as they struggle to overcome the complexities of opening a simple door!

The single player missions are far too short, due to their in-door nature. All the Ghost recon missions were set in a wide open expanse, and could take between 15 to 30 minutes to play through not counting save/reload time. The missions in SOAF barely last 10 minutes, and to top it off, there are only 11 missions in the game. Having only bought the game yesterday, I'm already on level 9, and so I'm starting to feel a little hard done by.

As a multiplayer game it's about on-par with Ghost Recon, but a lot of it is down to your own personal preference. If you prefer in-door close quarter combat, then this game is worth a look. If you preferred the wide open battlefield-like expanses of Ghost Recon, then I imagine that you will be disappointed.

Overall, I'm starting to wish that I had borrowed my friend's copy of this game before I went out and bought it. All I can really say is the film better be a damn sight better than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars A terrible, terrible game, 26 Aug 2003
By Vincent Harvie "zulu9812" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The developers did not put a lot of thought into this game. One has the sneaking suspicion it was a shameless cash-in on the movie that this game is based around, in order to raise money for future projects. Incidentally, the game features NONE of the movie's plot or characters, and barely even alludes to them.

All the members of your team have the same model and skin, with only a tinsy-winsy colour difference between Red, Blue and Gold teams. Rather than being able to select individual weapons, you pick from a set-loadout based on a criteria, e.g. stealth, breeching, etc. You can't even switch between teams, or even team members. You can't make plans pre-mission, Rogue-Spear style. You can't give orders on the fly, Ghost Recon style. All in all, you have a game in which you simply shoot at things. You have very little choice of skin, weapons or tactical approach. This game takes all that away from you. The game is insultingly short: 11 missions? Rediculous. So there isn't even a lot to do. Which may or may not be blessing, depending on just how thoughtless you think this game is.

This game might have been less awful if there was a thriving modding scene, with gamers avidly making the game better. But there isn't. What you see is what you get: a deeply unimaginative, unenjoyable and uninteresting game. Don't waste your money.
