5.0 out of 5 stars Ready, Steady, Go, but not just yet!, 24 Dec 2002
By Mr. Sr Harrup "nehpetsrh" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Back in the 60's we all saw Donovan on RSG, hyped up as the British answer to Bob Dylan. What an unfair millstone to hang around the man's neck. Donovan was his own man, the only similarity being that (poorly played) harmonica. This album shows that Donovan's music has stood the test of time on its own merit. Some of the songs here may be familiar, others not so, but all are excellent examples of a unique British talent, not a copy of an American one.

Listen to the Jeff Beck/Jimmy Page tracks, good rock music or what? Listen to the acoustic tracks, they stand shoulder to shoulder, alongside the best of any other folk artist. Put them all together this adds up to a great introduction to the man, or a great trip down memory lane.

One criticism (well there must be one) is the omission of "For Susan on the West Coast, Waiting".

5.0 out of 5 stars BLOW YOUR LITTLE MIND!, 27 Jul 2004
Like a lot of people, I've liked the few hits that everyone knows 'Sunshine Superman', 'Hurdy Gurdy man', but have never known what was worth buying. Thats where this compilation works. It's the most comprehensive and enjoyable collection of Donovan's work that you'll find. This guy wrote some great songs, and also created some pretty wicked sounds, that many still can't replicate today. The only thing missing for me is a track called 'Celeste, but thats a small blot on a very psychedelic, swirlling landscape.

P. S. It's also worth the cover price for a track called 'Atlantis' which is featured on the 'Goodfella's' film.
(Been wondering who did it for years)

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional body of work, 25 Mar 2004
It took me by surprise just how impressive Donovan's music was when viewed as a retrospective body of work. The use of Mellow Yellow on a Gap advert last year alone attests to the ultra cool relevance of the man's sound 35+ years on.
People often refer to him as the poor man's Dylan but - and this may be controversial - Dylan never wrote anything as blissfully magical and engaging as Jennifer Juniper or Sunshine Superman.
A reappraisal is definitely long overdue.

Yes, this is definitely the best "Best of" to buy. It includes recordings from his early period, not the remakes of Colours and Catch the Wind on an earlier Greatest Hits; it... Read more
