While Crawford Tate and Gregor Reid's early excursions into the widecreen world of rooftop chases, knife-edge suspense thrillers and 60s cop themes, may have spoken the cinematic language of Schiffrin, Carpenter and Bud et al, Before The Dark--their debut long play--indicates a very definite change of direction. That's not to say it doesn't still engender similar cinematic sentiment; it does, it's just been tempered through a more hands-on approach, including the use of less samples and more original and organic, live instrumentation. Check the sturdy hip-hop beats and haunting piano melodies of "Pendulum" and "Reflections" or the whining police sirens and dark breakbeats of "Head Spin" which still beg for celluloid attention. It's within tracks like "After Dark", "Lost" and "Crash And Burn" however that the change is perhaps most apparent. Bright, optimistic disco-house, light bossa jazz and shape-shifting, synth-heavy guitar rock, are not maybe what you've come to expect from the Glasweigen duo, but then again, that's probably exactly the kind of response they were looking for. --Found Sounds
