Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There are rally games and there are rally games and then there's Colin McRae Rally 3 on the PlayStation 2. It's difficult to know where to start the review on the third instalment of this hugely successful franchise--the eye-wateringly sharp graphics might do, the easy-to-get-to-grips-with gameplay would be a winner, or the understated but superbly well-done commentary and sound would also do the job. In the end, it's probably easier to start with "just buy it".

As you'd expect from a top flight rally sim, everything about the vehicles on offer can be customised and tinkering under the bonnet between stages really produces a difference. If you're a really bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the bonnet, side panels or windows out mid stage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder and Mr McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D--the level of detail is amazing.

With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from races over individual stages to a simulated three-season tour of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and believe us, by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about.

Thankfully, Codemasters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to co-driver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. Perhaps the strongest element of CM3, though, is in the gameplay. The car handling is spot on and in wild weather (snow, rain, fog and more) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form.

The PlayStation 2 has a wide range of good games and a handful of true AAA titles; Colin McRae 3 falls into the latter category as a real must-have. --Chris Russell

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a sim, not a sunday drive, 30 Nov 2002

I really think some people are missing the point of this AMAZING game. It's a full blown sim. It's called 'Colin McRae Rally' not 'Colin & Friends'. Thats why you can only play AS Colin, in champ mode. Now the game is quite hard, and quite unforgiving. Not unlike Colin himself. At first you may think that the car is hard to control, fishtailing all over the place. But when you give it some time you will find that the sensitivity of the steering is SPOT ON. It gives you total control. Playing this game remindes me of the first game on PS1, or the first wipeout game. Both of these games were very hard to control at first, but with some practice you find both were amazing games. Thats what Colin McRae 3 feels like. I think we are so used to the same old stuff, when a game gives a new challenge, some of us just say 'this is crap' and don't give it a chance. Games like this take some getting used to. If you don't want a new challenge, then go buy one of the old games and remain stuck in the past. As for the rest of the game, the graphics are stunning. None of the old problems like tape at the edge of the track being solid. Now it even flaps in the wind when you snap it. The attention to detail is stunning. And the game has been tested to perfection. The pace notes are all spot on, and the sheer atmosphere of the rally is there in spades. If you don't want such a 'sim' rally game, then try the new WRC 2 Extreme. It is not quite as good as McRae, but is more arcadey in nature and still a very good game. But the hardcore rally freak will love this new McRae release. It has the x-factor. AAA stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colin McRae Rally 3, 21 Nov 2002
By A Customer
excellent graphics with realistic car damage: windows smash, wheels fly off and doors are ripped off. Accurately modelled rally cars, the focus, lancer, citreon saxo, ford puma, imprezza and fiat punto to name a few- you unlock more as you progress through the game. the stages were modelled nicely too, as your slide around a hairpin, small stones fly up into the air. Cars drive along a motorway in spain as you speed over it.
The only thing i didn't like was you can only enter championship mode in a Focus-I know its Colin Mcrae rally and thats his team , but still.
All in all though a very realistic rallying experience and if you like this game genre, this is definitely worth adding to your PS2 game collection

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Game, 3 Nov 2002
By A Customer
The real Colin McRae has not had the happiest season, but the third incarnation of the game that bears his name is in fine fettle. Despite a bewildering flurry of new rivals this year, it remains the best rallying game.

Initially, the graphics and attention to detail grab your attention, but as soon as you get past the preliminaries and down to some serious tail-out action, those become secondary to the feel of the car's handling and its startling impression of behind-the-wheel realism.

Colin McRae Rally 3 may cheat - by making the cars easier to handle than real rally cars - but it does not feel as though it does. Version 3 has, perhaps, gained a tiny amount of accessibility - the car setup, for example, has been simplified and has lost some of its fine control - but its most important constituent parts have received attention.

The damage model is convincing (although, if you crash in what would be a terminal manner, your car is merely returned to the road), the weather modelling is true to life, and the different surfaces (all of which are represented) demand different approaches.

Touches such as the way the plastic tape at the side of stages react to being run over provide an inordinate amount of joy, although not as much as nailing a tricky hairpin just like the professionals. Every boy-racer's dream
