Typical Guitarist Album, 16 Jul 2003
By A Customer
This album from Ace, formerly lead guitarist of Skunk Anansie, features a wide range of vocalists from all different genres of music. J.J.Burnell (The Stranglers), Lemmy (Motorhead), Cliff Jones (Gay Dad), Jason Perry (A), Benji (Skindred), Skye (Morcheeba), Shingai Shoniwa (Sonarfly), Saffron (Repubblica) and the Smokey Bandits all contribute tracks to this eclectic album. The album has a varied sound, ranging from the soft, dark sound of tracks such as 'Phoenix' and 'No Fear Of Falling' (both featuring the vocals of Shingai), to the more up front, heavy sounds of 'Skiers of Texas' and 'One Way Love' (featuring J.J.Burnell and Lemmy respectively). The highlights of the album for me would have to be the wonderfully mellow 'Prisoner', featuring the vocals of Skye, the album opener, 'Jet From California' featuring Jason Perry, and by far the best track on this debut solo album from Ace, 'No Fear Of Falling'. Whilst there are definite hints of the Skunk Anansie sound in this album, it leans more towards metal rather than rock and manages to blend a wide range of styles together into a really very good album. My only criticism would be that occassionally the lyrics are a little random and meaningless (hence the missing star).
