1. String Quartet No.1
2. Conversations for flute, oboe, violin, viola and cello
3. String Quartet in A major (c.1915)
The suite Conversations features not just the conventional inspirations of woodland scene and ballroom, but also a committee meeting which gets out of hand, and a busy Oxford Circus tube station in London. These are fun, witty, neatly characterised works, clearly influenced by Bliss's time in France after the Great War, and relished here by the five performers, not least by Nicholas Daniel and his rich, rounded cor anglais in the Soliloquy.
The String Quartet No.1 is more rhapsodic than deeply passionate, more astringent than outwardly attractive, pervaded at times by a darkness that hints at the fact it was composed early in the Second World War. Beautifully crafted, and played here with utter conviction and clean virtuosity, the rhythmic drive is irresistible. --Andrew Green
