Naxos is to be commended yet again for recording repertoire that is relatively unknown. The Esclarmonde suite is jolly but lacking in orchestral finesse in this performance - it really pays to invest in the complete Sutherland/Bonynge set of the opera on Decca, immaculately played and, it goes without saying, incomparably sung. The Cendrillon suite is lovely on Naxox, however, and is just the sort of easy listening for in the car that helps on a long journey. Massenet is a wonderfully professional composer: he writes in a luxurious, orchestrally sumptuous idiom and is often inspired. Second drawer maybe, but always ear-catching.
