Absolutely stunning, 13 April 2003
After playing Agent Under Fire, which i got rid of the day after i bought it, i was expecting a better effort in this game and it delivers. Before you even start the game you get an amazing Bond movie style opening sequence with a load of ladies dancing around for you. And the whole game only takes two blocks of memory which can't be bad I have this version of the game and a friend owns the X-Box version and there really is no visible difference in the look of the game. One problem i have seen on this platform was in multiplayer mode, occasionally in the middle of a firefight with the maximum number of bots and players on a large level the game slowed down dramatically for a few seconds, apart from that there were few problems except the usual glitches that you alays encounter in these kinds of games for example i've disappeared under the ground on the sky lift level and been able to shoot the people above me without them being able to see or shoot me and occasionally you'll find an ordinary bad guy who just won't die no matter how many times you shoot him in the head but these are just very minor problems. The game does often seem to be unfinished, as if the developers got bored or ran out of time or money or maybe they had to finish it by the release of Die Another Day as some of the early levels are some of the best looking and play the best, The Exchange for example is an excellent level especially the start where you have to snipe enemy guards to gain entrance to a party hosted by the bad guy, Drake Unlike Goldeneye which obviously was completely based on a film the levels in Nightfire are mostly original- the best in my opinion being Chain Reaction where you have to snipe your way through against enemy snipers who are very well hidden and can kill you almost as easily as you can them- many other levels seem to borrow ideas from the bond films which also works very well. The last level, Equinox, for example is on an International Missile Defence Platform where you get to use a Phoenix Samurai which is just a moonraker laser with a nice name. The difficulty curve in the game is very nearly spot on when playing on the easiest setting but on the harder settings levels such as Island Infiltration and Equinox become very hard and gaining platinum medals on the last two levels is nearly impossible. The medals that you gain by performing well on a mission are a new feature and are are accompanied by new characters or scenarios being unlocked for the multiplayer mode and reward cards which seem to have no purpose whatsoever. Gaining medals certainly increases the longevity of the one player mode once you've completed it on all the difficulty settings. You have to gain a Gold medal before you can attempt to get Platinum where you have to pick up small 007 icons to get the required amount of points which often involves searching around a level for ages before you can find and then actually get to them. Performing 'Bond Moves', such as blowing up barrels next to the bad guys rather than shooting them directly or sliding down ropes or shooting cars tyres rather than blowing them up, earns you more points towards your medals and increases the lifespan of each mission. As always you have a variety of gadgets to use including the Phoenix Ronin, a briefcase that opens into an automatic macine gun that you can remotely control if you want so you can shove it in a room, hide round the corner and shoot everyone inside. Bond also has a micro-camera that is somehow able to show you where bad guys are behing walls which makes certain levels a lot easier. You also have a selection of vehicles ranging from a skidoo in Alpine Escape, a 4X4 in Island Infiltration and the V12 Vanquish in Enemies Vanquished, Paris Prelude and Deep Descent where you use it as a sub. But the car missions are not amongst the best The multiplayer mode is absolutely stunning, we've often realised we've been playing capture the flag for over three hours. It really is the best multiplayer mode out there. If you're playing with one friend it's good to pit yourselves against a host of bad guys in capture the flag or team arena. Or if you're slightly more popular team arena or arena can provide hours and hours of entertainment. The other scenarios which you unlock are probably really good also but compared to capture the flag and arena they don't seem overly impressive and are often just very slight variations on other scenarios, top agent for example gives each player a set number of lives and the winner is unsurprisingly the last player left alive. The eight multiplayer levels are all very enjoyable with the ravine, sky lift and especially snow blind being the highlights. Where the multiplayer mode really works well is with all the options that you can mess about with, the different weapon sets such as state of the art or explosives and the different levels can be great fun. Having a sniper rifle on the ravine is great as you have a clear shot at anyone venturing outside. The bots are based on characters from the bond movies as usual and some special ones from the game. You can set the attributes and personalities of each bot, Goldfinger for example runs around picking up everything he comes near. Jaws is the toughest as he has three times the health you have and it's best if you don't play against some of them with sniper rifles as you won't stand a chance. And the AIMS-20 which can be used as a grenade launcher for it's second function can make multiplayer kind of easy. But when you strike the right balance between weapon set, level, number and strength of bots, team size and scenario the multiplayer will keep you hooked for hours. This game is a definite must buy though as you definitely get your moneys worth of entertainment
