Michael Marra's new Cd is a real joy from start to finish. The
man just gets better and better.With superb sympathetic production from Alan McGlone and Christopher Marra and supported by the best musicians from Scotland,and Dundee in particular. The 14 songs on the Cd are great and show that Mr Marra is surely the best Scottish songwriter. From the
opening track "Albert White Feather" with it's Ellington groove
and layered percussion, to the album's closer, the superb "Scribbled Down Drunk (But Posted Sober) with just guitar and harmonica the listener is introduced to the rich tapestry of
characters that inhabit Michael's songs and who allow him to explore the human strengths and failings found in each of us. A
wonderful collections of songs and music that will surely bring Michael Marra the wider recognication his awesome talent deserves. Add the name of Marra to the list of the great songwriters Carmichael, Porter, Webb, Wilson, Newman, Dylan, Simon, Waits, Lennon, Sexsmith........

Michael Marra's stuff never gets stale for me. He's been writing and recording since the mid 1970's and seems to get better and better: great melodies, great lyrics, great performances. He should get more recognition, and if you buy this I guarantee that you'll soon be telling everyone how good he is. Everyone I've played his stuff to has ended up buying more. Word of mouth is the only real test of an artist's worth, not record company promotion or TV exposure, and Marra passes that test with flying colours.

This album has a track called "Frida Kahlo's visit to the Tay Bridge Bar". Anyone who can write a song to that title has to be worth 12 quid of your money. The previous reviewer covers all the Scots session musician stuff and I agree with all he says, except that I don't like Track 1. But all the others are just wonderful. It's intelligent, funny, touching. If I had the wit and skill to write songs, these would be the songs I would like to have written. Just buy it, OK?
