5.0 out of 5 stars Classic recording, 15 Jun 2005
I'm no expert when it comes to recordings and I wish i could write with the technical expertise of the previous reviewer, however i have heard many recordings of the Eroica and this is one of my favorites. This recording is from 1952 and the sounds quality is pretty much what you would expect, mono and with a fair bit of hiss. One has to look beyond the technical sound quality because the opening chords distract you immediately into the world of sheer brilliance of this symphony. I am not one who gives over credit to conductors, perhaps because I do not appreciate their contribution and so I cannot comment on Beecham's but the orchestra sound as if they have practised this piece beyond the realms of mastery and into automatic mode! This is not to say that they are not trying, far from it, the impact of individual chords and the sudden crescendos that so characterise Beethoven are so sudden and abrubt that even Beethoven himself would jump! The first movement is possibly the finest movement of the symphony and the contrast in feeling with it and the second is very effective indeed. The speed of the whole symphony is how I would imagine it and how I always expect it to be whenever i hear this symphony, there are so many recordings that i find far too rushed and indeed some played so slowly, but this one finds the natural balance between urgency and deliberateness. There is nothing in this recording that I would change however I may say that the Klemperer recording of this symphony also from the 50's is just as good if not better with the slow movement particularly beautiful. If you are looking for a solid Eroica with all the Beethoven characteristics perfectly interpreted then this symphony is very fine indeed

5.0 out of 5 stars A great performance, 21 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Toscanini famously said in a rehearsal of the Eroica "Is not Napoleon ...Is Allegro con Brio". Beecham is of the same opinion: this is the Eroica as great music, not as a philosophical statement. After a pair of opening chords delivered with cracking precision, Beecham launches into a swift, compelling and highly intelligent performance of the first movement. The overall timing for this movement is roughly half way between Klemperer's and Toscanini's. The orchestra is first class, and with Beecham's encouragement are able to make many passages that are simply rhythmic chords in some performances into real music. Every good performance of a masterpiece like this reveals something new: Beecham's reveals more than most. Anyone interested in Beethoven's music should hear it. The Funeral March is played more as an operatic lament than as the usual trudge through rainy streets. The Trio of the third movement has Dennis Brain on horn. The statement of the theme in the last movement is particularly well played. The sound is good clear mono, comparable to the mono Klemperer. There is a little background noise in some places, but not enough to be annoying.
