Svetlanov conducts a fine performance of what is, along with the 21st and 17th, arguably Myaskovsky's greatest Symphony. There are now, I think, five recordings of this work and this performance is possibly the best since Kondrashin's classic recording, once available on Russian Disc.
Unfortunately Svetlanov does not include the optional chorus in the deeply moving final pages and this leads to a slightly less spine tingling conclusion. Still, it is interesting to hear the work presented this way, I would not,however, want this recording as my only version of this great work but it does makes an interesting supplement to Kondrashin's version. That however might be difficult to find and therefore I would also recommend the spectacular new recording under Neema Jaavi on DGG.
One of Myaskovsky's finest inspirations is the poignantly nostalgic flute episode in the Trio of the Scherzo, second movement and that goes very well in the Svetlanov account. So, recommended but with reservations.
