I come across so few people who have seen this film, which really suprises me as it is in my eyes one of the finest grindhouse classics out there. Needless to say I cannot recommend this film enough to horror fans who haven't seen it. If you make one impulse purchase this year make this it. So incredibly atmospheric, you can almost smell the grottiness emanating from the screen and the morbid low key organ music helps set the mood as the corpses and Esra's sanity continue to decay. I've also not known a film that teeters so closely between the darkest of horror and the darkest of humour, it has some genuine laugh out loud moments, and Roberts Blossom is fantastic in the lead.

Technically speaking, the transfer is immense. I was worried it may lose some of it's grittiness compared to the old grainy prints previous versions were produced with, but thankfully it doesn't. The main feature alone is enough to make this a great, long awaited release on DVD and blu-ray, however the vast special features really make this such an amazing package. As a big, longtime fan of the movie, it really has been slim pickings when I've tried to find out anything about the background or making of the film so the commentary and featurettes really are a godsend and fill a big hole, particularly the excellent commentary with the ever enthusiastic Tom Savini and Scott Spiegel's great tribute to Blossom (our star, not the TV show). Certainly my favourite Arrow release yet, hopefully this will introduce many more fans to what is an absolute gem of a movie.

In between the unbelievably tiresome Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Thing [DVD] [1972] [US Import] and the wonderful and unconventional familial Vietnam zombie horror-drama Deathdream [DVD] [1974] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC], producing duo Bob Clark and Alan Ormsby made this picture. Clark did not direct this one but produced it (uncredited), but it shares Deathdream's wonderful small town ambience and ingenious use of a low-budget to add to the intimate atmosphere. What sets it apart from both Deathdream and Children...is a distinct lack of supernatural elements. This film, in case you did not know, is based on the real life nutter and sometime-killer Ed Gein, who also inspired Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs and many more movie crazies. Unlike most, this film presents an extremely faithful version of the story so while it may not be as good of a movie as any of those (it's not, frankly), it is VERY good none the less and is easily the most honest.

Using very simple elegant cinematography and a repeating Christian hymn on church organ as it's aesthetic, the film manages to also play with mood in a way that some may find disrespectful but shouldn't. Black comedy in this film is NEVER at the expense of a victim or real crime, but rather the absurdity of an OBVIOUSLY CRAZY person in the midst of a town who (as Gein really did) repeatedly confesses the bizarre and deeply abhorrent things he is doing only to be met with ridicule and dismissal. Frankly, the real case was pretty absurd too!

THE STORY

Ezra Cobb (excellent: Roberts Blossom), a grown man lives with his dominant and sickly mother. Since he was young, the religiously fanatic woman has indoctrinated Ezra to hate women - all except for her of course.
When his mother dies, the already deeply disturbed Ezra becomes very lonely and isolated. He becomes delusional and imagines his mother talking to him, telling him to bring her back home. One night he drives to the cemetery and digs her up.
Slipping away more and more from reality with each passing day, he begins to dig up more bodies of deceased women restoring them from their decomposition even using some as home decor.
His obsession soon grows stronger and goes far beyond merely digging up the dead, as he begins to kill the women himself, finding more and more creative ways to decorate his home.

THE MOVIE

DERANGED is based on the real life serial killer Ed Gein, as are THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, PSYCHO and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, but neither of them are as close to the real Ed Gein as DERANGED. Perhaps that is the reason why DERANGED is probably the most disturbing of the lot.
I personally find DERANGED just as good as the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It has less action than the CHAINSAW MASSACRE but has the better acting.
DERANGED is very macabre and has a lot of dark humor. It is definitely not for everyone's taste, despite not being overly violent or gory, most of the more graphical scenes are kept off-screen. The setting will definitely offend most people as it deals with murder, grave robbing and necrophilia.
The acting, is top notch, all actors are convincing and the movie is rather slow-paced and well directed by Jeff Gillen and Alan Ormsby. The story was written by Alan Ormsby.
