This is a collection of the first three Symphonies recorded by Colin Davis in the seventies, with the Suite in D recorded by Solti and the Chicago Symphony as a fill up

Davis was and remains an ardent supporter of Tippett, and these are good performances, if showing their age a little in hi fi terms. Strangely the oldest a recording of the best of the 4 Symphonies, No 2, has the best sound, the more recent recordings come from the 70s and have a rather " digital " sound, even though they no doubt pre date the digital era.

Fans of Tippett will want all 4 Symphonies and the Hicox performances are worth the extra money. From being a mainstream composer only 20 years ago, Tippett's music is being strangely sidelined, the critics who praised him now are more interested in the latest fashion. I find his best music as deeply moving as ever, in fact I much prefer him to Britten, but I know this is very much a minority view. For those who are uncertain, I would suggest starting with the 2nd Symphony. Sadly this excellent performance by Colin Davis is not available seperately but the Hicox is available as one disc as is the composer himself on NMC
