Sybarite is a nom-de-plume for Brooklyn-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Xian Hawkins. Nonument is the kind of album that made the 4AD label famous in the 1980s: beautifully packaged in the distinctive v23 style, musically abstract, lyrically opaque. Like the early releases by This Mortal Coil or the Cocteau Twins, Nonument is certainly beautiful, but beyond that it's difficult to say what it thinks it's doing.

The songs on Nonument are played by Hawkins with a floating cast of collaborating musicians and vocalists. His palette is almost exclusively electronic--even the birdsong on "Homegrown Cultures" sounds robotic--and his compositions have a tendency to go wandering off at peculiar tangents. The best tracks are those on which a singer enforces some sort of form and meaning, especially "Fresh Kills", which moves Sybarite towards the space-age melancholy of Air. Otherwise, Nonument is pretty, but perplexing. --Andrew Mueller
