5.0 out of 5 stars i can't think of a better Dutch Composer, 11 Mar 2006
Vermeulen was also a music critic and a rather fierce one at that. His constant harping at Megelberg (programming too much German music)completely alienated him from potential performances and the 2nd symphony (1920) had to wait until 1966 for its premiere by the Concertgebouw orchestra.
it's an intriguing musical language: Shades of Stravinsky,Varese and Schoenberg and a certain dead pan quality which anticipates the irish composer Gerald Barry.Whatever the case may be i can't think of a finer Dutch Composer than the neglected Vermeulen....there's a grim, unrelenting tread to some of this music which is utterly absorbing.
I can imagine better perfrormances...some rather sluggish brass playing and undernourished strings but the overall impression isn't without charisma.
Strongly recommended!
