Amazon.co.uk Review

Violence, nudity, terrorism and swearing are not the usual cartoon fare, but with Appleseed we find ourselves firmly in the cyberpunk territory of Manga cinema. Based on the comic series by Masamune Shirow, the film's story takes place in a post-World War III future, in particular within the mega city of Olympus. With the city administered by the Biodroids (a race of perfect half-human, half-robot hybrids), there begins a human resistance to a society that offers little in the way of real freedoms. As with most of the Manga genre, the deceptively simple animation (reminiscent of Pokemon) conceal more than a few complex issues. Appleseed proves to be a thought provoking, if a little confusing, examination of the "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" argument, particularly as it somewhat blurs the moral borders by instilling both sides in the conflict with a degree of sympathy. Definitely one for Manga fans, but also recommended for SF buffs and those curious to try something a little different.

On the DVD: Appleseed on disc has various language options, with the possibility of watching the film in either the original Japanese or dubbed English. The picture is bright and clear, as is the soundtrack. Highly recommended is the audio commentary from voice actress Larissa Murray and Manga expert Jonathon Clements, which not only fills in many of the gaps left by Shirow's original film but also provides an invaluable and often humorous insight into the genre as a whole. --Phil Udell

5.0 out of 5 stars IGNORE OTHER REVIEWS FOR THE *WRONG PRODUCT*, 22 May 2005
By S. Lee "Eccentric fellow" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The reason is because they are for the old purely handdrawn animated, NON-CGI version. Notice how it says the reviews are for an 'out of print' version. This is an all new updated version I have ordered from Amazon.com that is purely in CGI and made in 2004! Don't believe me? Go to www.amazon.com and look for Appleseed (the 2004 one) in the DVD section. The original had pretty basic animation, but in this version it is all action. Try go to www.quicktime.com and check the trailer out in the 'independent' category (if it is still there whenever you see this review).

2.0 out of 5 stars Shirows work too large for the small screen?, 7 Dec 2002
By Stephen (Northampton, Northamptonshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Masmune Shirows Appleseed has been popular with Manga fans for years and given this particular titles strong following, an animated version of the original comic book was probably inevitable. The post apocaliptic utopian setting and cinematic story telling style that characterised the comic book have however sadly been trimmed down for this comparatively low budget production. The central theme of the terrorists struggle to assert their own identities against the totalitarian olympian society is not given adequate space in a very short running time and character development suffers as a result. Deunan and Briaereos the principal characters are almost added into the plot as an afterthought and their personalities don't really have the space to shine. In summary the best that can be said is that the most was made of limited resources in this work and my advice for new viewers of shirows work is to either start with the original comics or try the much better done Ghost in the Shell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for 2004 version, 16 Jun 2005
There are two versions of this film, the original (drawn) version and the 2004 (CGI).
Having seen this film in subtitles before its release in English I have to say it's an awesome film. The CGI is stunning, out-classing all except Ghost in the Shell 2.
The film's set in the future where bioroids (ie: human look-alikes) co-exist with humans and, like any good Manga, the ending has a surprising twist.

Top-notch film; definitely one of the best Mangas in my list.
