As compilations go, it seems to me there are usually a few weak tracks thrown into the mix when the compilers are running close to their deadlines, but I'm pleased to say that Pure Jazz Chillout keeps up the high standards throughout.

The music shifts between classic tracks such as Julie London's 'Cry Me A River' to the modern beat of US3 and Fourplay, with a good mix of new and old, instrumental and vocals, mellow and upbeat. Several very well known tracks are also included such Louis Armstrong's 'We have all the time in the world', Grover Washington's 'Just the two of us' (as featured in the Carling advert with the crab!). This can make it feel a little commercial in parts, and I've little doubt some tracks only find a place in order to make the album more accessible to popular music fans. This is no bad thing unless you already own most of the songs on their individual albums however, and Pure Jazz Chillout can be a high-quality introduction to the wide-world of jazz for curious music fans, or a cool and relaxing summer evening mix for the experts.

Thiry-five songs on two CDs make this very good value too, so pour youself a dark rum, light up a cigar, dim the lights and chiiiilllll!!!
