If you want Photoshop but don't like the price tag, 9 Oct 2003
Than this is a wonderful package. Wacom tablets are the best in the business and once you've learned to use a tablet you'll wonder why you ever tried to draw with a mouse. You use the pen just as you would a real pen, and can adjust settings so that the harder you press the wider/more opaque (etc.. depending on what setting you have chosen) the line you draw on screen. You might at first wish you had a bigger graphics tablet, but if you price up larger Wacom ones you'll soon change your mind. They can run into thousands of pounds. They are excellent both for postwork on photos and for original artwork.Photoshop Elements 2 follows on from Elements in bringing you many of the features of Photoshop, with a set of basic but useful filters, a variety of brushes to get you started (you can make your own) and the wonderful dodge (just make that pixel/group of pixels lighter) and burn (sorry, I meant darker) tools amongst many others, all of which come from the original photoshop package. It opens all the common picture files (jpeg, tiff, psd etc..) and saves in them too. The only really comparable product is Paint Shop Pro (which I also have). Since I got this program, I haven't used PSP once. If you want to post graphics to the web, then the save for web feature is great, giving you a chance to adjust the size and quality of the document until you have a picture that isn't too big for people to easily view on dial up connections. There's also plenty of help at the Adobe site so if you get stuck theres somewhere to go and find things out. If you want to use your computer to do art, or just clean up your photos, but don't want to spend more than £500 on the industry standard, get this cut down version. As a plus, if you ever do get Photoshop, you'll find the tools and layouts familiar. Just buy it. It's great. It's one of my most used programs :-) Personally, I'd throw painter away and just enjoy the tremendous bargain of Elements 2 and a Wacom Graphire Pen and Mouse.
