Product Description

CD Description

Singer Glenn Danzig had been a favourite in the undergroundpunk scene since the '70s, with a pair of influential outfits, the Misfits and Samhain. Big-time fans of Danzig's work were the members of Metallica, who constantly sported shirtsof Danzig's bands past and present, sparking widespread interest for his 1988 major label debut, simply titled DANZIG. Rounding out the band was Samhain bassist Eerie Von, ex-Black Flag/Circle Jerks drummer Chuck Biscuits, and newcomer John Christ on guitar.
While the music and subject matter ofthe Misfits and Samhain relied on comic book horror and cacophony, DANZIG showed that Glenn had brought in elements of blues rock, plodding Black Sabbath-esque metal, and Jim Morrison-like vocals, while the lyrics seemed to rely on two themes: women and religion. Written entirely by Glenn Danzig, the album is considered to be his finest by many longtime fans--such classics as "Twist of Cain", "Not of this World", "She Rides", and "Am I Demon" were all included. But the best-known track remains the original studio version of "Mother",which would turn out to be Danzig's commercial breakthrougha few years later when included on the 1993 live mini-albumTHRALL: DEMONSWEATLIVE.

5.0 out of 5 stars life after the misits, 7 April 2006
well well well here is where it all began then, well kind of for mr glenn danzig. and what a way to start a nearly faultless start for a man with a very prolific past not the easiest of things to take on especially after such a long time away from the limelight. but what do we get for our money with this little fella..... well we get some really good very catchy tunes mainly of the heavy rock variety and not the punky tvpe that you would expect from glenn the riffs are awkward but stil catchy and the harmonies are unexpected but still set up home in your brain for weeks, i challenge anyone who hears 'mother' for the first time not to hum it atleast once a day until they hear it again.... and then probably even more afterwards. i you like your rock groovy and different then try this bad boy on for size i dont think that youll regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a late 80's classic re-assessed in 2007, 2 May 2007

This album is a killer. Bought the original on vinyl import the week it came out and just purchased the re-issued CD.

Danzig's finest work to date.

When it was released nobody in the Metal music scene was doing this. Glenn Danzig's intelligent lyrics and moody vocals (a cross between, Elvis, Jim Morrison and himself!) matched with a musical homage to Black Sabbath and AC/DC!!! Couple this with the very solid rhythm section of Eerie Von/Chuck Biscuits and John Christ's contorted lead guitar and you have a Record that should be in every self respecting Metal-Head's collection...

Released in 1988 glen danzigs debut solo album if you will,is very far removed from the misfits but in saying that misfits fans should find plenty to love about this rock n roll album, the first thing that strikes you when you hear this is the baritone style of glens vocal range, jum morrison is certainly an influence here and indeed the odd song here could easily be from the doors album l.a woman, another thing that you will notice is that the songs dont have the two minute wonder style of the misfits, the songs here range from 4 to 5 minutes each in average hence there is greater depth to the songs, thats not to say they are better than the misfits, they are just arranged differently and if course as i stated earlier this is a rock n roll album with a sense of groove and lastly the songs dont deal with brain eating zombies and so forth but more down to earth things such as heartache and that kind of subject.
The album opens with the dark but memorable 'twist of cain' and from that until closing track 'evil thing',you get 40 minutes of what is pretty much essential listening, tracks such as 'soul on fire',the sublime 'mother' and the excellent 'end of time' with the innovative use of xylophone thrown in are all here, and this album is similar in style to its sequel danzig 2,so get those two albums and you are onto a winner.
