5.0 out of 5 stars Pure fighting history!, 17 May 2003
SNK are the only company that has stayed true to it's roots. And it's roots are fighters! In the hey days of the 90's one game ruled the arcades, The King of Fighters! This is an excellent port of an amazing series that continues to be released on it's original format, the Neo Geo! Playing KOF not only reminds you of what 3D fighters lack, it makes you remember all those 2D fighters of yester year. KOF is a classic and the GBA version proves it has got years left to play!

2.0 out of 5 stars King of (Obscure Japanese) Fighters, 5 Mar 2003
Hmm.. I read a piece in Edge recently where a writer was attacking Western gamers' habit of elevating obscure Japanese games to automatic classic status, dismissing clunky dialogue and paper-thin plots as having been 'lost in the translation'. Clearly this is the case with KoF as I have been entirely unable to make any sense of the characters or their inexplicable monologues after fights. The action will be very familiar to veterans of fighters through the ages - best of three bouts per fight, except with the added interest of switching characters (you start with a team of 3 plus one 'striker') if you get beaten. The controls are tight and the collision detection is not too bad but the AI is nothing if not predicatable. The standard 'one easy bout followed by one you can't win then a final round decider' is very much the order of the day so if you're familiar with the SF or Mortal Kombat series, don't expect anything revolutionary.
Graphics are quite nice in a very anime style, but animations at times are exceedingly jerky - clearly a lot of frames have been dropped to squeeze this onto a GBA cart. The music and sound effects in general are appalling - this the last thing I can remember that sounded quite as bad as this was 'StreetFighter 2' on the Atari ST - turn the volume down and save your batteries.
All in all, this game is not too hot. The tight conrols make the fighting not entirely unrewarding, but I would suggest that anyone who's not already a huge fan of the KoF series should look at Tekken or one of the SF GBA games first of all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Five minutes of fun, 13 Jun 2005

I paid only 400 pennies for this game. And quite right too as it certainly does not have much lasting appeal. In fact I finished it twice the very day I started playing it and was about to go for a third today but it just wasn't worth it as all the levels (8 of them) were the same and there was no variety other than the different types of attack between the 18 characters. The backgrounds are blandly drawn and the knockouts unspectacular.

All the usual KOF characters are here, such as Terry, Andy, Joe, Mai and, my fave, Geese Howard but I'm afraid this game is rather tedious and far too easy.
