This recording gets a high recommendation if only because it's the only one available of JC Bach's delightfully melodic, Italianiate liturgical music. Fortunately, Wieland Kuijken leads a decent (if unexceptional) period-instrument performance that captures the galant charms of this very operatic church music.

The orchestral ensemble is fine though the strings seem a little weak, and the brass intonation is shaky. The soloists are all good, though arguably none of them make much of an impression: they're a tad too polite and restrained, lacking in "oomph". (Try soprano Valerie Gabail's solo in the "Qui tollis" section of the Gloria -- pleasant yes, but lacking in any passion).

Still, it's assuredly not a bad disc and I'm very glad to have it in my collection -- it's just not perfect. Now if only Richard Hickox and his Collegium Music team would move from Haydn Masses to JC Bach's output the results would surely be much more invigorating.
