Amazon.co.uk Review

You've read the comic, you've seen the film--now be the mutant! X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge puts you in the adamantium-spiked shoes of the X-Men’s meanest hero.

While comics are having a bit of renaissance in films lately, with several decent versions of four-colour heroes making it to the big screen, the only half-decent superhero game is still Spider-Man. Wolverine's Revenge should change all that with what promises to be a genuinely worthwhile game in its own right. Tying in only loosely to the new X-men movie, this is basically a Wolverine simulator which traces his life from his first appearance as Weapon X in 1968 to a series of deadly battles in the modern day against the likes of Lady Deathstrike and Sabretooth.

As you'd expect, the emphasis of the action in the game is on 3-D combat and this works extremely well, with various combos to unlock and the ability to fight multiple bad guys at once. More interesting though is the way you can use Wolvie's animal senses to follow scent particles in the air, hear distant sounds and track an enemy's heat signature. This aspect of the game works incredibly well and allows you to play the game as either an all-out actioner or a more tactical, stealth-based affair.

It's unusual to see a comic character portrayed so accurately in a game, with all their powers intact, but Wolverine's Revenge really pulls it off and combines it with some great gameplay and cool graphics. --David Jenkins

Product Description

Featuring an original story line written exclusively for Activision by comics' industry legend Larry Hama, and featuring the voices of Mark Hamill and Patrick Stewart, X-Men: Wolverine's Revenge lets players take on the role of Wolverine, everyone's favourite X-Men tough guy. In the game, Wolverine faces a race against time to find an antidote to the viral time bomb that's just been discovered in his system. With only 48 hours to live, Wolverine returns to the clandestine Department H facility deep in the Canadian wilderness, to uncover the terrible secrets behind the Weapon X laboratory and the experiments that turned the mutant hero into a precision killing machine.

As with all mutants, Wolverine has unique abilities that set him apart from the rest of humanity--deadly claws to defeat the greatest of foes, animal-like super senses to assist in tracking enemies, an enhanced mutant healing factor, unbreakable bones to withstand devastating amounts of punishment and superior strength and reflexes for an added edge in combat. In X-Men: Wolverine's Revenge players will have to master all of these skills in order to defeat the sinister forces massing against them led by arch-villains Juggernaut, Wendigo, Magneto and Sabertooth. Luckily, players won't have to face the onslaught alone and can expect occasional backup from fellow X-Men including Professor-X and Beast.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best, 3 Jun 2003
I should probaly begin by saying that I am a massive X-Men fan. I enjoyed the comics, cartoons and films. It is for this reason that I purchased X-Men 2 Wolverine's Revenge and rightly so. My first impression was good. The environments were good, the fighting moves were fine, it was all looking very promising. Then I started to get into the game and move quickly through the levels. It was at this moment that I realised that everything was pretty much the same. The moves, the ambience and the end-of-level challenges. Monotonous, monotonous, monotonous. It is possible to play this game and enjoy it for several hours, at most! Being such an avid fan of the X-men, I even allowed myself a two day cooling off period. To no avail. There wasn't even some kind of multiplayer deathmatch mode to save the day, a setting where you could delight in hunting your girlfriend or little brother. Alas, I fear that the creators rushed this product to coincide with the film release. A shame.
