The 18-year-old Dong-Hyek Lim is one of four young pianists chosen by Martha Argerich for an early CD-launch--she hopes their careers will thus be kick-started at a time when life is exceptionally hard for their ilk, no matter how exceptional their talent. Korean Dong-Hyek Lim, who won second prize at the International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in Moscow when he was 12, does not disappoint. Chopin's second Scherzo opens with a big muscular tone, then develops a silken sheen as it episodically unfolds; there are moments when one can almost hear Argerich's own sound, as the lightning strikes and the thunder rolls. The Nocturne floats dreamily without losing its hard-edged precision--it is surprising how many young pianists from the Far East play Chopin as though they were his compatriots. The Ballade displays a tenderly unforced rubato, and ends in a joyous explosion; the Etude is pure sunlit cascades. Dong-Hyek Lim's Schubert, on the other hand, feels curi! ously detached: the composer's "black-winged demon of sorrow and melancholy" makes no appearance in the desolate opening number where Lim is the soul of decorum. Likewise with the Ravel, which takes a long time to generate the "fantastic and fatal whirling" the composer required. But it's all beautifully played. --Michael Church
