This was great! I'd never seen this film until this newly released, uncensored international version put out by Synapse. It shows how perfectly a black-and-white film can be used to produce growing, sustained horror with atmosphere. With the lights out, I watched this little gem, and occasionally paused the film to listen to the house when I thought I'd heard an unusual "bump" in the night; after all the horror films I've seen, that doesn't happen that often any more.
Castle of Blood (in Italy, "Danse Macabre") was directed by Itallion icon Antonio Margheriti, who made a name for himself with Sword and Sandle and Sci-fi films. In this movie, he created perhaps one of the best evil dead stories of all time. The premise, an eager, young reporter for the London Times meets Edgar Allen Poe and a companion of his, Blackwood, at a tavern called the Four Devils. From the start, we feel as though we've stepped right into a Poe story, where everything is dream-like, and turning slowly towards some approaching horror. Our hero is offered a wager that he can not survive the night in Blackwood's family castle, emerging at dawn unscathed. The castle is supposed to be haunted by something not just frightening, but deadly. In order to assure an interview with Poe for his paper, the young man takes the bet, not at all believing in the supernatural. What follows is a night fraught with evil manifestations, as ghost after ghost must relive the last insanely violent moments before their deaths in the house once a year. Our hero, aided by a beautiful exotic ghost played by Barbara Steel (fresh from her success in "Black Sunday") discovers his very soul is in jepardy unless he can escape the claustraphobic, shadow-filled interior of the house.

CASTLE OF BLOOD - DVD [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] - Multi Region DVD Player for Europe & Maybe for other countries too other than the US & Canda.
I have just bought this remastered and longest version of the Movie! The one I have bought is by a company called Synapse. Synapse have done an amazing digital restoration of Castle Of Blood! They have used four old different Castle Of Blood films & got the best quality from the four films, video & sound! The film is dubbed in English & few very short scenes in French. The scenes which are in French in the film have English subtitles. But don't worry, they are only few short clips like this! I hate subtitles myself, but the few clips in this film, didn't bother me at all! I saw this film in the 60s in an very old cinema, which was a spooky in it's self & really added to the atmosphere! It's a film I have always wanted to see again, as I have never seen it on TV,VHS or DVD till now! Watched the film today & it was as good as I remembered! I think the film being in Black & White, makes it more spooky!Like I say I am very pleased with DVD & how they have managed to make the quality as good as they have! I would say anyone who likes 60s Horror films, would enjoy this! Oh & it is best watched at about 11:15pm, in a dark room with the curtains drawn & on your own! ;-)

Story info.
When American author Edgar Allan Poe visits London, he is approached by British journalist Alan Foster, who becomes the target of a peculiar wager. Not believing Poe's assertion that all of his macabre stories have been based on actual experience, Foster accepts a bet from Poe and his friend Sir Thomas Blackwood that he cannot spend an entire night in the Blackwood's haunted castle. Once installed in the abandoned castle, Foster soons discovers that he is not alone!

I have been waiting to see this movie again for over 40 years.
The first time I saw it was in 1966 at a Tivoli Cinema in Blackpool Lancashire.
I could never find it available on VHS, and when I went onto DVD I searched for it again.
Then this year I looked at Internet movie Database and saw it had it had been released at last on DVD, remastered and totally uncut.
I saw the DVD distributed by Westlake Entertainment corp for sale on Amazon UK at a reasonable price and purchased a copy.
Imagine my disappointment to discover on viewing it that this was not the remastered version and totally uncut, but a very poor quality picture (Very dark and grainy like a bad VHS copy) and far from being uncut I can only describe it as being butchered beyond belief.
I have just looked at internet movie database and saw that someone said
they had seen a terrible USA TV Version with poor quality picture and bits removed, looks like that is version Westlake put out.
Also I have discovered the remastered and uncut version was put out by a company called Synapse, so will purchase a copy of that one.
So based on the version I purchased I can only give it 1 star and I believe that is being generous.

I had never seen this movie before today and I must admit it is one of the creepiest ghost/living dead type of movies I have ever seen and I've watched a lot over the years.First of all people have criticised the black and white elements of the film but I consider had it been photographed in colour the impact of the creepy dark and dismal internal castle scenes would have been lost completely. The storyline has elements of THE HAUNTING and THE HAUNTING OF HELL HOUSE(both creepy freaked out movies) but Barbara Steel carries her character of a ghost extremely well. The plot centres round a wager to spend the night in the castle of the title and our heroic volunteer decides to do this for a quite sufficient monetary reward which is taken from him in the end scene(which I will not reveal in the twist ending-you will need to watch how the plot unravels to appreciate this ending).Basically the eternally damned ghosts have to return once a year to relive the events when they murdered people when they were alive and guess what? new blood has to be taken once a year too!So combining elements of some of the other horror movies(or is this the other way round)I believe we have a fairly original twist on the classic ghost story.I would recommend the Castle Of Blood to all horror fans and I feel this is one of Barbara Steel's best roles of the genre.Incidentally the print is superb and the distributor has taken a lot of care combining several versions to create the ultimate.Well worth a view and a collector's item!
