Product Description

CD Description

This 2006 reissue of THE BEST OF THE GUESS WHO features three bonus tracks, all of which were recorded in 1971, the same year the compilation was originally released. Otherwise, the album is exactly the same as the one that's been in everyone's '70s rock library since the beginning of that decade (with the exception of its greatly improved CD sound, of course).
As good as a "best-of" gets, the collection shows the full range of what these Canadian rockers could do. The riff-centric heaviness of "American Woman", the band's best-known song, may lead the uninitiated to think of the Guess Whoas mere hard rockin' Neanderthals, but as this diverse set shows, the band could flit from baroque pop-balladry ("TheseEyes") to psychedelic folk-rock ("No Time"), to evocative, jazz-inflected grooves ("Undun"). The range of styles here--whether lush, harmony-laden soft pop or backbeat-driven rock--serves as a reminder that the Guess Who were one of the more versatile and interesting bands of the late-'60s/early-'70s pop/rock mainstream.

2.0 out of 5 stars Guess Who's greatest hit (just the one), 8 Dec 2003
By Mr. R. B. Ager "Ronald Ager" (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Led by Burton Cummings and one Randy Bachman, the Guess Who had one enormous worldwide hit single in 1969 ("American Woman" with the short but sweet "No Sugar Tonight" as the double A-side - now that's what you call value) and several minor ones before and after in the States and their home heath of Canada.

This compilation includes both tracks, in their (unnecessary) extended forms, and the best of the rest, which are instantly forgettable. After their six minutes of fame Bachman left, shortly to go into overdrive with Fred Turner, leaving Cummings to continue to plough a lone songwriting furrow that became increasingly concerned with environmental issues and less with what you would call catchy tunes or riffs. There are a couple of exceptions - "Albert Flasher" is 2 mins 25 of joyful boogie, and "Rock and Roller Steam" is what you'd expect from a title of that ilk. All in all, though, this CD is only worth it if you really want to replace your old worn out 7" single.
