Product Description

Product Description
Power is everything in PC strategy simulation game Republic: The Revolution. Following the fall of the mighty Soviet Union, dozens of autonomous states have sprung up from the crumbling remnants. One small republic, Novistrana, has become a hive of brutality and corruption. A ruthless dictator, Vassily Karasov, rules the country with an iron fist and a control based on fear and oppression. With a personal vendetta against him and seeds of discontent spreading throughout the nation, now is the moment to seize power and liberate the masses. Time to start a revolution.

Starting with a single loyal supporter you must create a powerful nationwide faction strong enough to oust Karasov. Using a combination of influence, wealth and force you must attempt to gain the allegiance of prominent public figures including members of the secret police, councillors, celebrities, priests and criminals. Hundreds of diverse actions enable you to order and manipulate the masses--from rallies and riots to constructing crime syndicates, holding charity galas, organising secret police hits or broadcasting news propaganda.

Revolutionary AI techniques create living and breathing individual citizens to inhabit the cities of Novistrana. Each person will have detailed daily routines and their own set of beliefs and loyalties that govern their behaviour, producing consistent and realistic reactions to situations that arise in the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars A matter of taste, 22 Jan 2004
As with many things in life not everyone will take a liking to everything.
Republic the revolution brings politics to the PC. And in fairness does a pretty fine job of it too. The 3D world comes under a lot of scrutiny and has dissapointed a few gamers who came to expect more than the occaisional glance to a world which is very easy on the eye, but remember this is not the first game in this genre which uses a 2d screen for the majority of play - for example the impressive Total War series does exactly this.

And remember if becoming a politician and ruling your populous as a generous leader or a cruel dictator (you choose but each action makes a reaction) sounds like your thing - then at the price this game sells for you could do a lot worse than give this a whirl.

The game is a matter of taste - lets face it, football haters won't rush out to buy Fifa! You know what you like - you decide!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ambitious, but sloooow, 9 Sep 2003
I bought this game after being taken in by the lovely 3D city views. Sadly these seem to have nothing to do with the playing of the game, most of which is played from a "map view". Quite a disappointment.

I have always been a fan of strategy/management games like Civilisation, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer etc. but this game is really hard going. Maybe if I persevered it would become more exciting, but I can't see that happening. Don't be taken in by the screenshots, try before you buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best PC game I have ever played, 26 Jul 2004
WARNING If you only play games for the pleasure of blowing people up / Don't enjoy using your mind in games / Have no idea about politics or history then THIS GAME IS NOT FOR YOU!

Anyone still with me? Good. I can then tell you that THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC! And I dont mean that lightly.

This game explores a whole new genre to be developed for games - political strategy - which is much more complicated, involving and interesting than today's politicians show! This is active, revolutionary politics and it is totally engrossing.

The game takes place in a former Communist country loosely based on Ukraine. You play a man who has a personal vendetta against the corrupt, undemocratic President and the aim of the game is to overthrow the government and form a democracy. You achieve these aims by carrying out actions to increase your support and infomation in areas and also to attack other political factions vying for the top job. On the way you recruit other members and can direct their actions too. You can choose between three paths - Force, Influence, and Wealth - to achieve you aims and each path has its own advantages and disadvantages. The system works very well, and means there is plenty of replay value.

The graphics are beautiful. One annoying thing about the game is you do not carry out actions in the gorgeous game world, but you can watch your rallies, hitmen, and strikers from an eye-in-the-sky or at ground level.

The music is beautiful, inspired on Communist revolutionary songs, and helps create the deprived but hopeful mood of the game. The game is also huge. I have been submerged in it for two weeks now, and I still have not completed it!

Overall this is fantastic. As i said above it is not for everybody, but for an intelligent, informed person it is overwhelmingly good.
