Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Part Ibiza Uncovered, part The Sims, Beach Life is the latest "reality game" to hit our PCs courtesy of Ian Livingstone of Fighting Fantasy fame. Beach Life is basically a god sim which lets you create the holiday resort of your dreams, whether that's a resort full of beautiful people living "la vie de loca" or drunk Brits trying to grope the Reps, is up to you. There are two modes to play through: the campaign mode in which you work your way through a set of scenarios and the sandbox mode. The campaign has just the right balance between serving the needs of your guests and lining your pockets--you have to tackle anything from protecting your visitors from Shark attacks, spiking their beer so they get amorous on the beach or just providing them with the right balance of fun, food and respite.

It's very pick up and play and you won't find yourself getting bogged down with too much detail. Yes the game is all about providing your guests with what they want, but as long as the beer is flowing, the nightlife swinging and there's a 24 hour burger joint to hand, you won't go far wrong. That's not to say that you can't refine your pleasure island into the most beautiful, high class establishment you can afford; it's just you will probably want to rack up the beer strength, employ a few security guards and then watch people stagger about the island throwing up in bins.

Graphically the game looks fantastic particularly the weather effects. Up close though it's rather pixelated and looses some of the detail, but as with all god sims you will spend most of your time playing in the mid-isometric view so it's not a real problem. It's the sound where Beach Life really comes into its own. It comes with a built-in MP3 player which not only means you can skip between the cool ambient tracks that come with the game, but that you can also import your own tunes.

Beach Life isn't really ground-breaking stuff and might not appeal to the god sim fanatics, but what it lacks in depth, it makes up for in tongue-in-cheek, stylish and above all fun gameplay. --Kristen Bowditch

4.0 out of 5 stars Sun, Sea, Sand & Sharks, yes beach life has it all., 14 Sep 2002
Think you can create the Essential party island?
Ever thought you could do better and build the ultimate exclusive resort?

If the answer is YES then beach life is the game for you.

From the moment you pick up the box you know who Eidos are aiming this game at, and I am pretty sure its males 14- 23, with bikini clad females on the box and one on ever other page of the manual I am quite sure.

Presentation

A lot of time has been putting the whole presentation aspect of the game, the menu system is simple yet not to limited by its simplistic manner, the manual is a class publication, unlike so many manuals that come with games these days.

8 / 10

Graphics

If this game was out five years ago it would have been called revolutionary, but it now looks like just another bland three dimensional strategies.

5 / 10

Sound

im going to split this sound category into two sections, Music and Sound Effects.

Music

Outstanding some classic tunes from the likes of Angry Mexican DJ's, Laurent Garnier, Bent, Crustation. These make up the majority of your night time music which is more of your American house/ dance music. Where as during the day you get some chillout mellow classics such as, Kinobe - Bopalong, Crustation - Face The Waves (Instrumental). All selected through the ingame GipAMP MP3 player, you can even add your favrioute tunes from your very own MP3 collection and select the time of day for your tune.

Some of the best Chill out and club yourself mad sounds in any game.

10/10

Sound Effects

When I say sound effects in that essence I mean the other sounds you get in games . From the sounds you get when building a beach club, to the sound of a poor clubber emptying his stomach all over your red cobbled paths.

All the sounds are nothing new and sound like they have been in ever game since Theme Park almost ten years ago. Not really original material here, but sound good nevertheless.

6 / 10

Overall sound Score
8/10

Playability

Great once the camera controls have been mastered, the game has endless possibilities.

7 / 10

Lastability

With the now essential to most games Sandbox mode, this game will last as long as you are interested in it, I would say its got a good playing life.

7 / 10

Best Bits

+ Watching the little clubbers spending there money in your masterpiece
+ The Music, great tunes.
+ The ability to add your own music to the game, I recommend adding some beach boys, California Girls is one of my favourites.

Worst Bits

- Realising that you are going fail the level, dispite spending some two and a half hours on it.
- The lack of information the is given in the manual (but that is nitpicking right?)
- The small amount of levels
- It's the basically the same as ever Tycoon game you have ever played but with beaches.

Alternatively

There are various holiday managers such as this but non as modern I suppose there is the likes of Sim Isle, Tropico, and the like.

Summary

The game looks, sounds and plays extremely well with the addition of the sandbox system this gives the game a lasting longevity that the missions simply didn't give. A worthy purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fun game, 12 Sep 2002
By A Customer
I've just got a copy of Beach Life and I haven't finished all the levels yet but it's great fun. The graphics are clean and elegant, the sound effects are great, and the built in MP3 player is a top idea. The game comes with several tracks already by other artists, I'm not too familiar with them, but I recognise much of the music.

The gameplay spans 12 islands although I have yet to unlock them all, but there are several sub-tasks you have to complete to finish a mission. Collecting liter, tackling vandalism, improving the resort etc.

Having played it for several hours I find myself getting caught up in watching the antics of the guests - Keep an eye on the guests thoughts (its in one of the panels) to read some outrageous text.

I do hope they come up with some editors and add-ons, as this game is at least different from a lot of the games out there and is a blast to play.

Definately recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ibiza Uncovered!, 18 Sep 2002
Fans of Tropico and The Sims will LOVE this game! It's tacky, outrageous and very funny. The games interface is easy to understand and the learning curve spot-on. The object of the game is to build a successful beach resort and keep those punters happy! In return they will provide you with outrageous, hilarious and realistic action - watch your guests as they get up to all kinds of debauchery, drunkeness, brawls, romance(they even bonk on the beach!)and overindulgence.
Also included in the game is a MP3 player - you can import your own music and play it during the game!
All in all this is a fun, easy to play and addictive management sim....with added naughtiness!!!
BUY IT YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
