Amazon.co.uk Review
Want to play a first-person shooter on your console? Tired of there being no proper GoldenEye sequel? Wishing that you could play the part of a Barbary ape in the Wild West? TimeSplitters 2 is the game for you if you answered "yes" to any of these questions.

When Rare made GoldenEye for the N64 in 1997 they created the best first-person shoot-'em-up the world had ever seen and, arguably, has ever seen to this day. Many of the geniuses behind the game left Rare shortly after to set-up their own company, Free Radical; their first game was the rather rushed (in time for the PS2's launch) TimeSplitters but this sequel is polished to perfection and easily one of the best games of the year.

One of the main problems with the original TimeSplitters was its awful single-player mode, but this has been totally revamped for the sequel with a proper story mode, all-new time zones and weapons and absolutely mountains of unlockable hidden extras. Thankfully they’ve kept the wicked sense of humour from the first game, but there's also a lot more strategy for solo players this time around, including an amusing homage to GoldenEye's Arkangelsk Dam level as well as pastiches of other games and films scattered throughout the game.

The real reason for TimeSplitters 2's greatness, though, is the multiplayer mode. This is GoldenEye to the nth degree, with superbly designed levels, tons of weapons and all sorts of tricks and gimmicks such as remote control gun turrets and invisibility pills. It may lack the epic scope of Halo but in multiplayer mode at least this is a lot more fun--and fun, as The Beatles never said, is all you need. --David Jenkins

NGC Magazine
"A stonker of a time-travelling FPS with more than a whiff of GoldenEye. 92%."

5.0 out of 5 stars Immense FPS action from start to end!, 26 May 2004
First of all.. Timesplitters 2 in one of the best FPSs I have ver played. It is by far the best FPS mulitplayer on the cube and its one/two player storyline mode is just as good!

It contains a whole array of levels from Chicago to a level deep in outer space and it is this reason that makes the game so great. Each level is completely different and it all fits in with the storyline. You get engulfed in the different worlds and the atmosphere is great. Walking around Notre Dam waiting for Zombies to rise from the floor is totally thrilling (if not a bit scary) and being part of a wild west shootout in the wild west is awesome!
The graphics are great and the controls are also of top quality. It has the feature to create your own controller setup with the ability to assign buttons and analogue sticks to do certain moves if you do not like the original settings.

As far as I am concerned though, it is the multiplayer that makes this game a must buy! It is perfect for four players, but even if you are on your own you can play against the bots of which you can set different teams and assign different difficulty levels. With a whole host of gameplay modes such as the usual (team) deathmatch and capture the flag, but also completly original ideas, like Thief (Where you get coins for killing other players) and Shrink (Where you get smaller the more you die). It is the amount of choice you get mixed with the great gameplay which makes this game so great.

While it lacks the complete custmisation of multiplayer deatmatches like Perfect Dark on the N64 did, it still offers a load of options and you even have a stats screen that tallies all you have done such as accuracy and shots taken etc.

The other great part about TS2 are the Challenge and Arcade League modes. with objectives that include shooting off zombies heads as they come in waves towards you and playing as the monkey and collecting all the bananas in a time limit. It is these two modes that keep you coming back for more. both modes have lots of different levels with 3 different difficulty settings (The harder levels are totally different challenges, not just harder repeats of easier levels).
This whole game oozes quality and it is the wealth of gameplay modes that give it the quality.

If you like FPSs, or even just like a good bit of action then you must get this game. It has everything you want from a game.. Lastibility comes from the mulitplayer and thrilling story mode and the best bit.. Challenges and Aracde League.
The downright fun aspect comes from placing proxomity mines on your friends character face and watching them explode and the overall quality comes from the whole experience, the quality gameplay and great graphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best FPS on Gamecube, no question, 1 Nov 2004
By A Customer
I'll admit that it's nothing on goldeneye, but it is still AMAZING. it's just so much better than any other FPS on gamecube. I could not rate it higher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best FPS I've ever played!, 18 Aug 2004
By Liz Kemp (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
I've never been a great fan of any shooting games before this, briefly playing Goldeneye, before placing it down as too short, linear and generally rather boring, despite the immaculate gameplay. James Bond- blewh.
When I saw this, I was reluctant to buy- would I actually use it?
But opening it up, chucking it in the console, switching on and playing it I found that I could never be more wrong. It has an exciting, original storyline, humour, classicly awesome characters and so many levels, you'll be playing for a good while, if you do arcade. Loads of great weapons, loads more characters, more levels, and oh yes, more characters make this one not to forget. Imagine an octupus electrocuting a monkey in Mexico? Or a Chinese Chef run after the gingerbreadman to make him catch fire, in A CIRCUS? Or a tactical assalt lead by your soldiers agains a horde of robots, ducks, Elvis impersonators, Mexicans, Amazonian ladies and Circus freaks? This expands on TS1 and Goldeye and stuffs them together in one little box. Definitely a MUST HAVE for multiplayer gaming.
Oh yeah- there's a bear in it too. Wearing a hat.
