Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Taking third-person action and strategy to new heights, Commandos 2 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox is a great example of how to tackle the real-time strategy genre properly. Set over 10 missions in theatres of war across the globe, this is no place for gung-ho grunts. Care and thought are required in huge amounts before a shot is fired or the might of half the German army will descend and drill you full of holes--not a pleasant thought.

From the word go this game is hard. Very hard. Rarely does it cut you any slack; one wrong move and it's game over. Initially this can be very irritating, but persevere and Commandos 2 is a real gem. The game's designers have thought of just about everything when it comes to running, crawling, tip-toeing and creeping past the enemy--there are around 100 very short tutorial missions designed to introduce the control system and the various vehicle, weapon and stealth techniques available to the player, and these alone will take a couple of hours to play through; skipping them is a really bad idea if you want the best from this title.

In addition to wandering around on foot, a wide variety of vehicles can be commandeered and driven around (usually badly). Tanks can be used as offensive weapons, and boats are available for water-based missions. All of this Nazi-busting malarkey is brought to you by a squad of combatants including six commandos, each with their own special ability, a female member of the French Resistance, a dog and a rat (!), which makes for interesting gaming indeed.

Its relatively slow pace will put many folks off, but stick with it you'll find that and Commandos 2 is one of the best RTS games to hit consoles to date. --Chris Russell

"A great attempt at getting a complex PC title onto the PS2, strategy and puzzle fans will love it. 81%."

4.0 out of 5 stars the best strategy game for PS2, 4 Dec 2003
By Ivan Lietaert "Ivan L." (Slypskapelle, Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mission 1, I thought, would be simple. Wrong! I reach La Rochelle, the German submarine base by boat. I look for a safe place to go on land. Forget checking for mines. Wham! Game over. So now, I'm more careful. Once past the mines, it turns out I'm still outside the submarine base... I learn that I must use my map. So I go back to the water and swim towards a different landing spot. Once out of the water, I crawl towards a building (better be quiet). Unfortunately I immediately enter the building instead of first checking for German soldiers by peeking through the window. There's just one souldier inside, but he sounds the alarm, and even though I try to escape by leaving the building, his fellow soldiers are there already ... Game Over. So now, after reloading the game, I'm even more careful. I enter the building when the guard has his back turned towards the door. In a room, I talk to a imprisoned rebel. I leave him behind, but take his well trained dog with me. Unfortunately, I'm a bit reckless: a guard patrolling the corridor sees me and immediately starts shooting. Game over! When will I learn? In the trials that follow, I manage to locate the Enigma machine, but can see no way of entering the barracks. Then I realise that maybe I should consult my notebook. Inside, I find the clue: I must contact Natasha. She'll help ... But where is Natasha?....
Commandos 2 offers fantastic gameplay: the visuals are impressive and the enemy AI is just amazing. Controls, some say, are too complex, but hey, this is a complex game, so what do you expect? There are just two legitimate complaints, in my humble opinion: first, the loading time is quite long and second, the icons showing which skills and weapons are available are hard to recognise, and therefor you'll be paging through the manual quite often, trying to find out what a particular icon will do.
Production values are great, the sound and music is a joy, and there are enough missions to keep you coming back to this game for months!

4.0 out of 5 stars Men of Patience, 13 Sep 2002
By Damo (Cardiff, Wales) - See all my reviews
Commandos 2 is a good game. Despite what average marks other review sites give it, this is a good game. Although, this IS a COMPLEX game. One where you'll need to really puzzle over a mission for a good while before you work out exactly how to complete it. And thats why I reckon some people don't get it.

Its NOT the game to play if you want to charge into a bunch of enemy troops guns blazing and run around destroying everything in sight because Commandos 2 is more mature than that. Strangely, it reminds me of the orginal Lemmings, where you'd need to spend a good while devising your strategy and cobbling together a method after many failed attempts; but finally, when it all worked the sense of accomplishment is immense.

I'm not going to recite all the tech spec and numerous characters, scenarios, weapons and equipment because 5 mins searching the net will give you all those. Instead, I'm trying to give a sense of how the game plays. Which seems more important in a game recommendation.

If you're the kind of person who enjoys a challenge and thinking their way through a complex problem then you will like this. If not, you will quickly get frustrated and this isn't the game for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating, 7 April 2003
By PJ O'Connell (West Coast) - See all my reviews
I really wanted to like this game but unfortunately life is just too short.

I understand that others have said if you stick with it then it will become rewarding but I simply don't have the patience.
The controls are incredibly complex and it is painful to try and remember everything, some of the views can be extremly frustrating. The learning scenarios become tedious from memeory i think there were about 20 to complete before you can can even try and get the thing going.

Wanted to love it, it looked fantastic( although sometimes it was hard to isolate exactly where your characters were located) but just too hard. Sometimes in life you just want to plug and play. If you have the patience of Job then purchase it if not rent it then see if you get on with it.

I may try and use it again sometime but i'll need to have plenty of time on my hands.
