Amazon.co.uk Review

David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's sitcom 'Allo 'Allo started life in 1982 as a modest one-off spoof of the classic 1970s drama series Secret Army. A throwback to an earlier era during the 1980s heyday of alternative comedy, the show's decidedly un-PC mix of bedroom farce and crudely drawn national stereotypes was subsequently stretched over nine series in all (1984-1992), making it TV's successor to the long-running Carry On series. 'Allo 'Allo was not only similarly preoccupied with seaside postcard humour, it was also blessed with a cracking ensemble cast (including Carry On veteran Kenneth Connor) whose sheer energy eked out comic gold from even the laziest jokes about humourless Germans, cowardly Italians, "Tally ho!" Brits and onion-selling Frenchmen. Like Croft & Lloyd's Are You Being Served, it was the cast interaction more than the material itself that produced the laughs.

Gordon Kaye deserves much of the credit for keeping the show fresh. Whether he's plotting with the sexy Resistance leader, in cahoots with the Nazi commandant about a priceless painting of "The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies", or fending off the attentions of sex-starved waitresses under the withering gaze of his wife Edith, bumbling Rene is the lynchpin around which the endless farce revolves. Despite its determination never to vary the formula from week to week, the show had at least one virtue--it wasn't afraid to offend anyone. --Mark Walker

4.0 out of 5 stars I will say this only once.........!, 6 Nov 2003
By Mme Josephine Lejard (Cauroy les Hermonville France) - See all my reviews
This is still one of the best BBC classics. Of course it is corny and stereotyped and the touch of pure farce gives it it's charm.
No one nationality is singled out for special treatment that is another good thing. If you can't laugh at it then you've lost your sense of humour.
Who wouldn't want René as a "Love Slave " or want Monsieur Alphonse's dicky ticker to keep going? and aren't we all envious of Mme Edith's singing voice ....?
Even my children giggle at their antics, also, as we live in france........well, the accents aren't too far off the mark!
Come on folks try badgering the Beeb to get more out on DVD

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedy That's Guranteed To Make You Laugh, 29 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This wonderful boxet of 'Allo 'Allo contains all the first episodes, and some of the funniest and most memorable moments in British sitcom. Gordon Kaye as Rene plays it dead straight and as a result gives a comic performance that is par excellence. All of the other cast, in partcular Edith his wife, are wonderful actors of comedy and timing and complement the great David Croft scripts to even funnier heights.

The boxset is well worth the money and the picture and sound are ten times better than what I have seen & heard before.

Worth the money and just as funny no matter how much you watch them, and you will watch them over and over again!

5.0 out of 5 stars As funny as it ever was!, 28 May 2003
By Moni Gilbert (Tauranga, Bay of Plenty New Zealand) - See all my reviews
Great entertainment! 'allo 'allo hasn't viewed here in NZ for 10-15 years, so I was a little worried that it wouldn't be as funny today as it seemed back when I first saw it. Well, it is still a classic comedy. The pilot show IS amusing but by time the 3rd or 4th edition the plot has started to thicken and begun making all its twists and turns, and is side-splitting funny. In brief the story is set in German-occupied France, featuring Renee the cafe owner, his wife and two staff, Yvette and Maria (who he is secretly involved with both of them). Throw in assorted dodgy German officers, the Gestapo, the French resistance, a French forger and British Airmen - the only way I could sum it up would be to say it is a comedy adventure about the pursuit of a painting and the quest to get the British Airmen out of France. Excellent value - I really hope there are more series coming available in the future!
