Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
Schizm: Mysterious Journey is a thrilling first-person 3-D adventure game that will appeal to everyone from the novice to the experienced adventure gamer. A compelling, nonviolent story line, highly nonlinear gameplay, and incredible graphics combine with a mix of puzzles of varied type, including mechanical, logical, sound, and inventory based.

A fascinating adventure awaits players of Schizm: Mysterious Journey. It is the year 2083. Ten months ago, the first humans landed on Argilus. They found cities, towns, and industrial installations--all deserted. Doors unlocked, meals unfinished, strange machinery still operational... but no people. Scientists were brought in, research bases set up. Four months later, your supply ship has been sent to check on these bases. But when you hail them from orbit, there's no answer. The scientists, too, seem to have vanished. Now your systems are failing and you and your crewmate have no choice but to abandon ship. But where can you go? In Schism: Mysterious Journey, players explore the fascinating landscape in this unfolding story of an alien world filled with mystery and intrigue.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Flawed Implementation, 4 Sep 2002
It's a nice idea - a game where your two characters can't see each other, but interact to solve problems. The plot is excellent and the graphics could have been brilliant.

Problems:
1) It takes no interest in your graphics card; you're forced into the (at a guess) 640 x 380 resolution.
2) One problem has been mis-programmed. You work it out, but the answer fails. The reason is that the programmers seem to have a difficulty with addition and subtraction; you actually have to go to the walkthrough to get the answer so that you can continue the game. Even in the walkthrough (as when I last looked) the 'correct' answer is demostrably wrong.
3) One puzzle (towards the end) has by my calculation 2520 different combinations ((8!/2!x2!x2!x2!) = 7!/2), one of which is correct. There are no clues to the answer (according to the walkthrough): you have to do it by trial and error. Given that on average you'll do it after half the tries, it will take you 1260 attempts. As each attempt takes you about a minute, I'll let you work out how long it will take. My patience ran out.

Good idea, deeply flawed implementation, and to get a puzzle answer wrong is inexcusable in an adventure game.

Lastly, contacted the game creators - they have not been interested ...

JB

4.0 out of 5 stars A good game: good story, good puzzles, no problems, 4 Oct 2002
By Kea (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
Schizm is worth playing if you like games like Myst and Riven. I enjoyed it a lot.

It has a sci-fi plot with two characters, Sam and Hannah, who are stranded on the mysteriously-deserted planet of Argilus. You can take the identity of either and switch between them as necessary. Your/their search to find out what is going on on Argilus leads you through a set of strange alien locations and confronts you with some nicely tricky problems. As well as being fun, the puzzles do help build up the story-line. They vary in style and difficulty, but (in the CD version at least), they are all tractable. On the downside, the graphics are not as good as in Riven or Amerzone - but we're none of us perfect.

There is said to be more stuff on the DVD version, including an extra puzzle, but I've only got the CD version, alas.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Poor quality graphics, and you are unable to move where you want to, just where the game wants you to.
I found the game boring, what with having to backtrack all over the place, and some of the puzzles seem to require more knowledge of maths than I have. I the end I used a walkthrough, just to get it over and done with.
