Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The band that unwittingly begat the nu-metal frenzy, Korn have been semi-dormant since 1999's multi-platinum Issues, while bands they inspired such as Linkin Park have ruled the charts and minds of disenfranchised teens. The wait for Untouchables is more than worth it, however; the quintet's heavy sound and lyrical angst have not been dulled by success. Singer Jonathan Davis' often agonized, cathartic lyrics and slightly lispy, emotive delivery are as heavy and varied as on previous outings. On the first single, "Here to Stay", which boasts a spooky, Nine Inch Nails feel and Fieldy's aggro, down-tuned bass, Davis growls in pain, "This state is elevating / As the hurt turns into hating / Anticipating all the fucked-up feelings again".

Among and within songs, Korn move seamlessly and dynamically from gentle, spooky and lushly melodic to a bass-heavy propulsive, explosive musicality that boasts a death-metal intensity. "Embrace" is almost grandiose and Cult-like in its rock drama, in contrast to the punky, straight-up "Wake Up Hate", in which Davis' vocals are especially creepy and Marilyn Manson-like as he rants: "I'm, I'm filthy / Wasted piece of shit / I am disgusting / Take me away". Untouchables, with its brutal introspection and hints of misogyny, is sure to earn its parental-advisory sticker. But the album is still a must-have 62 minutes of deeply felt, ultra-intense spewings, a tour de force sure to strike a chord with fans and critics alike. --Katherine Turman

CD Description
'Untouchables' is the fifth album from Korn, and follows onfrom their 1999 release 'Issues'. Produced by Michael Beinhorn (Smashing Pumpkins/Hole), Korn's nu-metal sound has progressed, with this album being darker in content, and heaviermusically. Includes the single 'Here To Stay'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Komfortably koRn, 19 Jun 2002
Being a huge korn fan for many years I awaited the releaase of this album with baited breath hoping for a return to the original self titled album with elements of Follow the Leader. Hearing the first single Here To Stay I had high hopes that this would be the case, Unfortunately this isn't what the album presents to the listener however I found that it has a sound of its own and is unique in its own right. Gone are the Jonathan Davis Scats (Twist) and the bagpipes replaced but an altogether slower, more thoughtful vibe.

Here To stay - The album kicks off in classic style with a brilliant heavy riff and vintage Davis vocals. One of the high points and an obvious choice for ist single. 4/5

Make Believe - by far the poorest song on the album, confusing and plain irrtating, what were they thinking?? 1/5

Blame - Fantastic with an odd sort of 80's vibe (is that just me?) 4/5

Hollow Life - Sets the tempo for much of the rest of the album, dark and precise. 3/5

Bottled up inside - Good heavy riff, unimaginative rythm to the lyrics. 3/5

Thoughtless - Great song with a soaring chorus, sheer brilliance.
4/5

Hating - Very catchy but bizzarely subdued, I think it would have been better suited near the end of the album. Love the lyrics tho 4/5

One more time - Good not great, korn by numbers 3/5

Alone I break - Sheer musical brilliance, full of despair and hopelessness with an irresistable tune. 5/5

Embrace - ahhh very mosh worthy, class 4/5

Beat it upright - Erm good tune but S&M theme may nto be to every taste :) 3/5

Wake up hate - time to go mental kiddies, Heaviest song on the album, bit repettitive 4/5

I'm hiding - Brilliant song with a fantastic feeling of isolation 4/5

No one's there - Good album closer but not one of the album's highlights 3/5

5.0 out of 5 stars I Hate them, I really do......, 24 Jul 2002
By Adam Whatson (Dover, England, Yeah, Blah) - See all my reviews
Dammit.
After buying the first album, Life is Peachy, Issues and Follow the Leader, I thought I had the Bakersfield boys pegged as the founding fathers of Nu-Metal (arguably semi-founding after Faith No More). Then Nu-Metal started going all stale and smelly thanks to Fred Durst, Chester Bennington and co, so I was expecting more overhyped, cameo-ridden drivel from Korn (they did it on Follow the Leader and they never apologised). But what do I find? This is a different Korn. It's not obvious at first, especially not after the first (admittedly outstanding) track, Here to Stay. Instead of employing the uses of guppy faced red-hatted imbeciles, they use electronica instead. Hollow Life is the prime example of this, sounding like a cross between Nine Inch Nails and a delicate side, kinda like the soft bits from Mutter by Rammstein. So different is this new album, you will even detect the dulcet tones of an acoustic guitar (no, seriously) on Alone I Break.
I guess the stand out tracks on this are the two they released, Here to Stay and Thoughtless, along with Hollow Life. Like all Korn albums it stays consistently average to good, with about 2 or 3 tracks that have you reaching for the repeat button. But the main reason this gets full marks is because Korn have ingeniously managed to shift just outside what I would at least define as Nu-Metal, and that is a fantastic accomplishment given the trend of it. They said in a recent interview that if metallica could last 10 years then so could they. Judging by this album, you have to believe that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a pint of Stella, it's reassuringly expensive., 10 Jun 2002
By A Customer
It cost Korn a lot to make this LP, and it serves as both an admission that 'Issues' was a huge drop in standards, and an acknowledgement that what fans really want is to hark back to the days of the first album. Indeed, tracks like 'Thoughtless' and 'I'm hiding' very much reflect the style of 'Blind' and 'Faget'. On the other hand, 'Hollow Life' and 'No-one's there'(which has an excellent riff), are continuations of the 'Issues' style, but tighter, with better vocals.
What's most apparent on this album, however, is the fact that 80s influences seem to play a large part in the sound, particularly where melodies are concerned. The keyboards appear a lot more, and the temptation to resort to goth rock riffs is there (see 'Blame' and 'One more time'). Overall, 'Untouchables' is a lot more polished, and the extra money spent on production is easily noticeable. This is the first cleanly produced Korn record, and it's also the first one that's been excellent all the way through. Korn sound like a well-formed band, and they work better as a team. As a result, it's by far their best ever work. But don't discount the other LPs. Even 'Issues' was a pleasant listen.
