Antonio Margheriti (here credited as Anthony M Dawson as was the case with most of his US-aimed films) was probably the best Italian director when it came to action movies. Through the 1980's he gave us a whole host of madcap action movies with enough explosions per foot of film to rival any of Hollywood's most bombastic output. The Last Hunter is his "homage" (a word the Italians prefer over "rip-off") to Apocalypse Now, set in Vietnam with its central character, David Warbeck, taking on the role of a burnt out special forces operative heading off into the jungle for a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Much of the action is quite small-scale especially when compared to Coppola's masterpiece; small scale firefights in small villages or in catacombs within hillsides, floating gunfights in boats on the river, nothing too spectacular in Hollywood terms, but boy does Marghetiti know how to rig explosions - they're massive, often using some great miniatures and models to make the huge balls of flame he manages to produce look even bigger. The opening sequence in what appears to be a brothel is testament to this, it starts quietly and ends five minutes later with dozens of soldiers dead and fire and brimstone literally raining down all around. Aswell as explosions, being Italian you just know Margheriti's going to have a penchant for gore too - machete's in heads, big gunshot wounds, everything you'd expect from him is here in abundance.
The plot's fairly basic - David Warbeck is sent on a mission to silence an outpost behind Viet Cong lines that's broadcasting anti American propaganda. He links up with a platoon of combat-crazy US troops who happen to have a journalist (spaghetti regular Tisa Farrow) along for the ride, and together they all set off to carry out the mission.

I bought this film thinking it would be gory and horrific as it's a Vipco release and it quotes on the cover 'The most horiffic war movie ever made'. It isn't. Infact, there is only one bit which I can think of that is slightly cringing. Other then that, it's suprisingly tame.
The acting isn't that good, and could have been worse, but the plot leaves much to be desired. The effects are rather good for a B-movie, however during some of the gun battles it's obvious that the guns arn't actually being fired and are just being waved about the place.
But it's got a quality about it that I like. Whatever it is, if you like war movies, then you should like this. Don't expect Saving Private Ryan-style effects or acting though.

An American soldier becomes trapped behind enemy lines during the Vietnam war, he the joins up with others fighting with the Vietcong trying to get rescued.

Unlike a lot of other Vietnam war movies the word "fun" rarely raises its head, but if there is a "fun" Vietnam film this is it. Yes the story is nothing special and comes and goes throughout and the dubbing is about as solid as jelly, but this is not an in depth, serious look at Vietnam (far too many U.S. movies did this and it became a bit tedious), this is a plain and simple entertaining action picture, and it achieves this very well. Director Antonio Margheriti's does what does best, the pace is great, enough happens to keep anyone entertained, deaths, explosions (about a million), booby traps and a whole lot more, is thrown in for a good show. David Warbeck does a sterling job in the lead and is given good support by Tisa Farrow & John Steiner and for a low budget film it looks not too bad either. The final twist in the tale is a bit ridiculous though and in fact as with the rest of the film the plot doesn't hold up all that well, but you don't watch this kind of thing looking for another Gone With The Wind.

If you love war actioners you'll love Last Hunter, if you love gory horrors this may well be the war film for you, even if you just stumble across this one you may find it far more watchable than you might first think, just leave your brain at the door for 90mins and go with it. Clearly the DPP didn't go with it as they put it on to the Section 3 list, but as with most of his other work from around this time Margheriti delivers the goods. 3.5/5

Decent Vipco release, its a shame Vipco closed down as they had some very interesting titles.

Not a bad release, after the opening scenes the picture quality seems to improve as at the start the image is a little grainy but nowt too bad. Seen a lot worse.

Anyway The Last Hunter is an excellent vietnam film, not the sort of films I usually watch but this was very enjoyable. The story revolves around a mission to destroy a radio transmitter sending out anti American propaganda. It has a few corny flashbacks, unintentionally funny moments and the odd poor special effect but overall its very well done. The action sequences are great and the pace never drags. As it mentions several times on the box there are some pretty gruesome moments in it with some nasty deaths and graphic war violence. And If you have a phobia of rats you have been warned there is a scene you will not like at all!

The late David Warbeck is very good but John Steiner has the best role as Captain Cash, with some hilarious lines. Also worth mentioning are the jungle locations that look very authentic, and add a lot to the film.

Dont know what the region 1 release is like that i have seen advertised but this region 2 one is highly recommended.
