Amazon.co.uk Review
Why did Hollywood think it was a good idea to take Get Carter--Mike Hodges' classic 1971 study in gangster psychology--transplant the setting from decaying Tyneside to a present-day American metropolis, neuter the screenplay so that precious little of the original's acerbic humour and subtlety remain, and assign the lead role of Jack Carter, memorably taken by Michael Caine in the original, to Sylvester Stallone? No amount of Rocky-cum-Rambo routines can convince you that he's remotely inside the character, even though here Carter's psychotic side has been airbrushed out as he seeks revenge for the murder of his brother and rape of his niece.

Miranda Richardson is a wearily sympathetic Gloria, and Rachel Leigh Cook a not-too-bratish Doreen (is this actually used as an American name?). Mickey Rourke looks suitably wasted as loutish businessman Cyrus; Alan Cumming is an annoyingly smug computer whizz Kinnear (wouldn't you have pulled the trigger?), while Michael Caine loses all credibility for his cameo appearance as Cliff Brumby. Did he really need the cash?

On the DVD: Get Carter on disc is a classy but lifeless production. Extras include the theatrical trailer, cast and crew details, and six deleted scenes which are too brief to be more than off-cuts. Three spoken and nine subtitled languages are provided, and there's director Stephen Kay's pithy running commentary to enjoy. Even he, however, often sounds at a loss to explain just why the film was made. Thank goodness the original movie is also available on DVD. --Richard Whitehouse

1.0 out of 5 stars A blatant cash in and a complete failure..., 11 Jul 2007
The original was atmospheric, credible and gritty to the point of being brutal and remains one of the best films of this genre.

Whoever it was that convinced Stallone he could possibly emulate Michael Caine's screen presecence and acting ability, play the part of a London Gangster, or capture the same essence of the original needs their head examined.

Avoid!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear..., 14 Jun 2006
By The Red Menace (The seaside) - See all my reviews
Why? More importantly, WHY?

Michael Caine must wonder why Hollywood has it in for him with its morbid obsession of remaking his classic films. "Get Carter", "The Italian Job", "Alfie"... what next, Ben Afflick as the sole American who saves the plucky Brits at Rourke's Drift in a remake of "Zulu"? Far fetched? About as unlikely as getting mumbling muscleman Sylvester Stallone to take on perhaps Caine's finest role, the cold eyed, morally dubious killer Jack Carter.

And yet here we are in a film that, on its own merits is an average thriller, and Sly isn't too bad, but as a remake of a classic movie is utterly pointless because you cannot improve on perfection. Again, why? WHY?!

1.0 out of 5 stars For God's sake, buy the original!, 17 Mar 2003

This pile of rubbish is worth as few words as possible -

This re-make of Michael Caine's 1971 classic proves nothing but the nihilistic Hollywood inclination to destroy fine art. Sylvester Stallone does a hollow, soul-less impersonation of the original character, the plot, setting and artistic framework looks nothing like the original... shortly, this is a bad copy. In fact, I consider it to be an outrageous piece of theft. Do yourself a favour and keep well clean - the original film is a classic piece of art, this is americanised, money-spinning rubbish.
