5.0 out of 5 stars a new phase - and it's even better than the last, 21 Jul 2002
Muse are developing. Very quickly. Showbiz was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride that looks like it stretches on for miles yet. And Deadstar/In Your World is a new, even bigger loop.

When I first heard these songs, it was live at Doncaster Dome in November last year. I was eager to see what direction Muse had taken in their new material, and it seems they've headed off into deeper, heavier places. Deadstar especially, with its pounding intensity owes more to metal than classic guitar rock. It was said that Muse have tried to capture the live atmosphere of their songs, and it looks a lot more rough round the edges, as if it were live.

In Your World begins with a gentle rippling piano then bursts into a filthy guitar sound (think of the riff in Newborn) and then it all begins. The song is impeccably structured, and it has you shaking your head in disbelief at the ridiculous amount of talent this band has.

I bought the second disc with the b-side cover 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You'. I was intrigued to see what Muse had done with this kind of song, but I needn't have had any qualms as it's another superb adjustment into Muse's style, and surprisingly, it works very well. And after listening to a friend's CD1 I was equally impressed with Futurism, which has since become my favourite b-side. Another song which keeps in mind the latest switch of style. Muse are superb, and I sincerely hope their material continues to deliver as well as these new songs do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Star (is not dead) and 'In your world' (it needs to be), 25 Jun 2002
By Tom Kippenberger (Southampton) - See all my reviews
This is their best yet. They've got all the usual, storming riffs, heart tearing emotion and passion, sound intensity that seems impossible to come from just three people (but does, their awesome live too). And on top of that they've got originality of style as well. Dead Star is a must for anyone, fan or unenlightened alike. In your world and Futurism are also quite unbeleivable. Buy this single. And then await their next album, whenever it might be coming, with baited breath. Its probably worth inventing a time machine....

4.0 out of 5 stars deadstar/in your world, 2 Aug 2003
This review is from: Deadstar 1 (Audio CD)
More fine examples of the unique music by matt Bellamy and muse, Deadstar/In Your World are both unique in their own ways. Deadstar combines the heavier, rock side of muse with their usual soft though emotive singing. Excellent in every way, Bellamy seems to change whatever your mood you are in, to the tone, feeling and ambience of the music he plays. Along with excellent drumming by Dominic and the customary first-rate performance by this is by far one of the most distinct pieces by Muse, furthered by being solely released as singles and on their DVD, hullabaloo. The release of these 2 singles made muse fans have the need to buy and then await their forth coming album and singles, which turn to be no disappointment.
To make this spectacular release even better, they have included on cd1 the B-side "Futurism" and as the name implies, is a futuristic sound by Muse. Though almost eerie and shocking, it is excellent, though does not have the greatness or charisma of the best singles by muse. The first CD is made complete by the video for dead star, which is another masterpiece.
Starting with a calm ambient piano introduction, In Your World bursts into an excellent, electric song, with a great beat and brilliant bass line. Though quite repetitive throughout, the short but sweet song is quite obviously a new side of muse, a rock side. The extra track on the second cd, is "cant't take my eys off you" a cover, though still a palpable muse version, made unique by the variance of tones, pitches and feelings poured into the song by Bellamy.
Overall an exquisite collection of high class songs from muse, not to be missed.
