Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Squarely aimed at the family, the StyleCam Blink is a digital camera that is both compact and easy-to-use. With its simple point and click operation, multiple modes including two resolutions and continuous shoot and a stack of bundled software, the Blink sets new standards in digital imaging on a budget.

The StyleCam Blink is a compact digital camera that offers resolutions of 640x480 and 320x240 allowing for up to 400 images on its internal 8 MB memory. The installation process is very straight forward; install the drivers, reboot the machine and then plug the camera into a spare USB port. The camera itself is very easy to use; all of the features are accessible by the press of a single button. The small LCD window shows the camera mode and options available as well as the number of images taken. As well as taking still images, the Blink can take a series of 100 images that can be stitched together to make a short video clip. Also, the camera can be used as a WebCam. The images produced are sharp and clear and very acceptable considering the size and price of the camera. In comparison, images taken inside using the outside mode were slightly sharper than those taken using the indoors mode. Our only criticism is the slight shutter lag of about half a second; it becomes slightly annoying if you want to picture moving objects. If you're capturing still life or using the camera as a WebCam, this will be irrelevant.

The manufacturers clearly thought about their target audience when packaging the software with the camera. The unit comes with a range of six software titles including ArcSoft's PhotoImpression and PhotoFantasy 2000. The software is fun and very easy to use. Simply transfer the images from your camera onto your computer via PhotoImpression and then edit them to your hearts content. For those of you wanting to have a bit of fun with family members, PhotoFantasy 2000 gives you the chance to place someone's head on another body. Again, this is very easy to do and is a lot of fun. Other software included is VideoImpression, a basic video editing package and some WebCam software.

The Blink won't win any awards for image quality; but for how much it costs, you wouldn't expect it to. It does however, offer better quality images than its competitors. The ability to store up to 400 images on the 8MB memory is a real bonus. It's a great little camera considering how little it costs and the bundled software will keep children and big children amused for a good few hours. Grab one of these as they are going to be hot this summer. --Martin Snelling

4.0 out of 5 stars A good fun or second camera, 24 Aug 2002
By N. Davies - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First of all let me get this straight, this is not an all singing all dancing digital camera. I have seen a number of reviews where the reviewer was disappointed in the camera primarily because they didn't realise what they were buying.
What this camera is, is a fun camera ideal to carry around everywhere and use for taking quick shots, or for taking where you wouldn't want to risk your 'proper' camera.

It is extremely easy to use and comes with all the software, drivers and cables you will need along with a very helpful manual.

There are two picture modes allowing you to store pictures at high resolution (640x480) and low resolution (320x240). The picture quality at high resolution is good for a camera of this size, but not really comparable to something you'd expect from a larger camera. I think the focus distance is about 60cm, but anything around the edge of the picture will blur slightly. The size of the pictures varies (100k-300k), so where it may be possible to fit 100 hi res pictures into the memory as stated, this will not always be the case.

Because the camera doesn't have a flash, pictures taken on the indoors shot mode have to be done very carefully. A longer exposure is needed so the pictures can blur if you don't have a steady hand, but when you get the hang of it indoors pictures come out very well. This isn't a problem with the outdoor shot mode, but I have noticed that pictures can sometimes look a little washed out if there is too much light. Another handy feature - if the light level isn't sufficient the camera won't take the photo, so you don't use up memory with wasted shots.

Aside from taking still shots, the camera can also be used as a webcam. The picture quality is extremely good and the camera quickly adjusts to the light levels to give a sharp picture with vivid colour. It also comes with its own stand which is designed to be clipped onto the top of a laptop screen (ideal for video conferencing) but will also stand well on a desk. Whilst in 'PC mode' the camera will take its power from the usb cable and not the battery.

My only real gripe about this camera is that it uses volatile memory. If the battery runs out or you remove it, you will lose any pictures stored on it. However the camera will warn you that it is low on power, this should be taken as a signal to upload your pictures as soon as you can.

I take my Blink camera everywhere, and am certainly happy that I got it. If you are looking for a high quality digital camera then this is not for you. If however you are looking for a cheap digital camera to play with and use as a webcam then you won't regret buying this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classy little number........., 12 Jul 2002
By A Customer
Got my Blink there yesterday.
The thing is absolutely tiny and the photos on the Internet do it no justice. Everyone I've shown it to is amazed by its size.
Its so lite, I'd say the little AAA battery that comes with it is the same weight as it.
The people here in the office all want one now.
Ive been taking pictures since yesterday, of everything.
Theres a great, easy to use program that comes with it where you can put other peoples faces onto different peoples bodies, great fun. The software is easy to understand and install.
Right, so the pic quality isnt perfect, but if you get the right light, and hold a steady hand it does a good job.
The streaming shot thing is class too.
The only things I am dissapointed with are that it only works on Windows 98 and above and I have Windows 95 at home so I cannot use it there.
Also, it stores the photos using battery power, so upload the photos as quick as you can and clear out the memory to save your batteries. If your battery goes dead, all your photos will be lost, so be careful!
The camera itself is so simple to use.
There are very few options that can be selected using 1 of 2 buttons, e.g High Res, Low Res, Inddor, Outdoor, Streaming Snapshot, etc
All in all, its a great buy, well worth the pittance I've paid for it.
Go buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Fun (but you get what you pay for), 11 Jul 2002
By Steve Bates (Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Hi,

If you fully understand what features this camera has (and hasn't) before you buy it then you shouldn't be too disappointed. I didn't fully appreciate it and have found some frustration similar to that expressed in other reviews:

Firstly, understand that battery life is very short (I have consumed a brand new battery in one day and typically you can expect one week max!). The answer is to take your pix then download asap and delete them from the camera straight after (reduces battery consumption and avoids loss of pictures from your battery expiring!).

Secondly, the camera has no flash so of course it is going to struggle indoors, especially in dim light and images will tend to blur due to increaed exposure time and hand-shake. You just have to accept this and get on with it.

Despite this, however, I have had loads of fun with this camera.

My expectations have now aligned with what the camera can deliver and I carry it around more or less everywhere and just snap away at anything that takes my fancy. It has been used for everything including pictures of Servers at work (a bit sad but does have a real business use!), informal pictures at my son's wedding (I was the only person to have pictures available same day!) and less than sober snaps down at the pub. Okay, some pictures don't come out that well but, as I now expect that, I just take loads and inevitably get some good results.

There are other digital cameras you can get for around the same price that do everything Blink does AND have flash and non-volatile memory etc BUT you do pay by having to lug around something much bigger. The beauty of the Blink is that you can fit it almost anywhere and get good results (within the constraints of it's design). You will also be centre of attention as your friends will all be amazed by it's diminutiveness (and cuteness as the ladies say).

So, all the usual rules apply. Don't expect too much (spend some more money if you want everything!). Don't use it for when you need guaranteed results. Do use it anytime else and have some fun.

Hope this helps.

Steve
