Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Digital IXUS 330 is a compact elegant camera full of features for complete picture-taking control. The ergonomically designed cross-key controls make this camera easy to operate. The Digital IXUS 330 features a high-quality 35-105mm (35mm equivalent) 3x optical zoom lens, with a bright maximum aperture of f2.7. Its 2.0-megapixel CCD captures even the finest details. Canon's latest intelligent three-point focusing system AiAF (artificial intelligence auto focus) and evaluative exposure systems ensure the subject is always in focus and correctly exposed. The camera incorporates a unique "intelligent-orientation sensor" making the camera aware of which way you're holding it up.The Digital IXUS 330 also supports Canon's Direct Print printers. Direct printing is the quickest and easiest way to get photo-quality prints without a PC. Simply connect the camera to the printer, select the image on your camera, and print. With the 330's movie mode, it is possible to capture movie clips up to 30 seconds with sound and, by making use of the video lead supplied, the camera can be connected to a TV set, to view and share photos and movies. With the "My Camera" function the camera can be personalized by adding sounds and pictures. The Digital IXUS 330 is fully automatic, with a built-in flash firing when needed, however the more adventurous photographer can have greater control by accessing the camera's more advanced features. Users can choose between two metering modes (Evaluative and Spot, with AE lock), select from a range of White Balance settings (auto, 5 preset and custom), alter the equivalent ISO film speed setting (from ISO 50 to 400) and control the flash. The Photo Effects option allows images to be taken in vivid color, neutral, sepia and black and white. There is also a Stitch Assist mode for taking panorama shots that can be merged using the supplied PhotoStitch application. Going digital means easy connectivity between the camera and your PC's USB port opening up the whole new world of digital imaging. Canon's software suite for PC/Mac includes user-friendly Canon ZoomBrowser EX, PhotoStitch and PhotoRecord. This camera comes with a high-power Li-ion rechargeable battery pack.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Canon Digital IXUS 330, 7 Oct 2002
By Nicholas Man (South Croydon, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Out of careful consideration and testing of several cameras as well and much search on the web for reviews, I chose the IXUS 330 and am definitely pleased with the purchase.
The camera is rammed full of features and the packaged software is easy to get to grips with.
You will be snapping pictures in under an hour and trying out all the extras.
Not only do you have different shutter speeds, red eye reduction, white balacing, 3X optical zoom, 2.5X digital zoom, clear display, intelligent auto focussing, picture effects (Black and White, Saepia, Vibrant colouring, hazing and making the shot more crisp), but you also get the option to 'stitch photos together' in Canon's Stitch mode where you can take several pictures side by side which can later be sewn together with the packaged software.
The camera looks very slick with a complete metal finish bar the shutter protector, screen and flash and rubber port housing.
The camera comes with battery charger and battery + software.
I cannot find much fault with the package except that it comes with an 8Mb storage card(You will definitely want to up this a bit at some point). To sum up - buy this camera if you want a resonably priced digital camera with all the bells and whistles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic camera!, 13 Jul 2002
    By A Customer
I have been an amateur photographer for years and I have used many different makes of camera.

The problem I faced was that my Canon SLR's are not the easiest things to carry around. I wanted something compact, fun and easy to use - after A LOT of research/testing I went for the Canon Ixus 330.

I have had mine for a month and it is still fantastic! It is a solid, smart camera that has exceeded my expectations. I realise that there are cameras out there with greater pixel counts for less money etc. but I have to say that Canon cameras have never let me down.

If you can afford the extra then buy this camera! It is a beautiful product.

FYI - The camera comes with its own software (perfectly adequate but if you want something a little more pro then try Adobe Photoshop) but not with a carrying bag - the SHC-PS500 case is A MUST (it fits like a glove and has an extra little pouch for memory cards etc.).

The camera only comes with an 8meg card which is useless except for taking a couple of novelty pictures. I bought a 64 meg memory card for it and that stores about 127 top quality photos - low quality it will store hundreds and hundreds! I believe you can buy 256meg cards for this specific camera but I am not too sure.

The battery life is quite good but I have bought another battery for holidays etc.

I use a Epson Photo 890 printer to print out stuff at home - nice prints - most people can't tell the difference between them and a normal photo.

    One great camera!

5.0 out of 5 stars Small and Sweet, 4 Jun 2002
    By A Customer
I finally decided to take the plunge with a digital Camera and got the choice down to the Canon IXUS 330, V2 and Nikon 2500. The Nikon was dismissed because it has no TV output and sound for Video. It was a hard choice between the smaller V2 and the slightly larger 330. In the end the 3X zoom of the 330 won out.

I have no regrets. The Camera is still compact although it is quite heavy. The build quality is excellent apart from the rubber covers for the connectors and the plastic battery cover. The Camera is quick to power up although the auto focus can be slow to complete for the first picture. Battery life seems fine however additional or replacement batteries are expensive.

The pictures so far have been excellent. The colours are bright and the resolution is sufficiant for my needs. The video clips lack definition and are limited to approx 10 seconds on medium resolution but are OK for fun use. The auto focus has been able to resolve a wide range of conditions both indoors and outdoors and works well with the flash.

The software is sufficiant although serious users will want to upgrade to more professional packages to provide full control of the image. Note; this will work with both Windows 98 first and second editions.

Overall a stylish, compact and easy to use Camera which provides excellent pictures. It is not the cheapest in its class but I belive it is worth the premium for its build quality, well thought out ergonomics and compact size.
