4.0 out of 5 stars HEARTY, 2 Jul 2006
By DAVID BRYSON (Glossop Derbyshire England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is another of those mixed collections of pieces by one composer performed by different artists. As usual, it comes at a modest price, and I would very much have liked to give it the full 5 stars, but I find I can't quite do that.

The overture and the Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor come from Solti and the LSO in 1966, the second symphony from the LSO again but under Martinon this time in1961, and the third symphony is from Ansermet and his Suisse Romande orchestra in 1955. The LSO of that time was one of the world's finest orchestras, and Ansermet could do wonders with his own band, even if it was not really in quite that class. I have no fault to find with the technical quality of the playing (or of the singing in the Polovtsian Dances) anywhere on this disc, and the recording is of a high and homogeneous quality that suggests to me that there has been a certain amount of remastering going on. Insofar as I have some minor reservations about the production, I suspect that the recording may actually have a lot to do with them. It is very clear and `forward', but it lacks shade - it's all a bit too much in my face. None of the pieces here are masterpieces of refinement or delicacy, but enough of a good thing is enough. I would have been much more put off by lack of vigour and strength in the sound, but there is room for a bit of subtlety even here, as my LP performance of the Polovtsian Dances by Beecham leaves me in no doubt. This music is basically straightforward and extrovert certainly, but I would still have liked a touch more gentleness as a foil to the general extroversion, and I think I feel this about the playing as well as about the recording.

However I can still recommend the disc, particularly to newcomers. The price is where restraint has been shown, and these accounts will give anyone a very good idea of what this music is basically about. A leaflet is enclosed, but there is no liner note on the music or the performers, and one can't really complain about that on a bargain issue. Somehow I have managed after all these years not to have collected the symphonies or the overture, and this addition to my library is a bonus that I'm pleased now to have.
