The title is almost a give away. Cosmetique, Sarah Churchill and Justin Anderson, are steeped in the pop-trash aesthetics of London's Hoxton lifestye. But with lines like "trapped in an etemal cycle of consumpbon" they're also bewildered and bored by it. As such, this debut album resounds with 30-something existential ennui. A lo-fi, raw amalgam of Shangn-La hammonies, Spector-like echo drums and Suicide synth thrusts what Cosmetique lack in taut proficiency they make up in understated soul 'Straight To Video' and 'Bonnie', for instance, weirdly evoke the crushing loneliness of a 4am cab ride home. The sparse drum work and ancient synths are equally effective, but it's Sarah and Justin's haunted hammonies that create a splendidly frazled atmosphere. In 'Zero Maintenance GirKriend' and 'Jackson', they're also capable of sparky pop stompers full of IKe and longing. Ignore the ktsch flippancy; Cosmetique are searching for meaning and love amongst EC2's thrills, pills and petty hates. What's more, they succeed.

Imagine primetime St. Etienne fused with Blondie vocals - The Rolling Stones having an introspective, melancholy session in the studio circa '70 - and a healthy dose of D.I.Y. musical innovation combined with the sorts of tunes that make your heart sing, and this goes some way to explaining how utterly gorgeous and life-affirming this album is. If you're a fan of anything from Gram Parsons to Primal Scream to Acid House you should buy this without a second thought.

Sounds like the Shangrilas meets Suicide.Cranky synths,broken sun session guitar and disaffected girl vocals make this the must have album for electrobillys.
