4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent , but rips off fans with the one new track, 8 Dec 1999
By mikeydred@mindless.com (Newcastle, England) - See all my reviews
A good retrospective of Gabrile's work , although Rhythm of The Heat is conspicuous by its absence. Also falls in the the typical best of trap by included an "unavailable" track in the excellent title track "Shakin' the Tree". An excellent introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fundamental collection...if you don't have Peter'albums., 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Though you like an artist or group and you may have the whole discography, sometimes to have a collection - where all the best songs are supposed to be in - is enjoyable, overall when inside it you can find fundamental songs chosen for the ocassion and with some new realize into it. This is the case of "Here comes the flood" wich sound deeper and more romantic than original one in Peter's first album. Another example we have it in "I have the touch" or "Shock the monkey" which also sound evolutive and definetily better than original, in this case Peter's fourth album. So I change my opinion by thinking that always original versions are best than next; Peter Gabriel makes it possible, working over his own material. In this "fundmental" collection you find most of Peter's greatest songs and not just the commercial ones...well, could you think that Peter ever did a commercial song? Never! Maybe "Don't give up", with lovely Kate Bush's voice is more understooble, but in any case commercial...this is something that Peter lack in his extensive career, both Genesis or "solo" and that could probably has taken him to sell out much more, if he had been commercial I mean. At least he always mantained his personality, though he changed music forms in every single record, because from PG1 to OVO there's one world in between them, but not in quality - which has always been exclusive - but just in different vision, style and art-form (which goes from pure rock to techno and futurist). Peter seems that he always walked many steps before the others. In the collection I just miss a couple of songs: I think that "In your eyes" and lovely (maybe "classic" for this album) "Mother of Violence", from PG2 had a place here. But I don't understand why "Wallflower"(PG4) is not in the collection - in my humble opinion is one of the best songs in the Music History -. Rest of the songs are well chosen (sometimes collections are not well performed in the way they miss important songs). By I could definetily says that to introduce in Peter Gabriel's music and world you have to listen all his dicography, and then you'll understand how big has been Peter, from his first solo album (1977) to the last one, OVO(2000), and, of course rescue all the Genesis work and Peter will penetrate directly into your heart, with his profound and uncomparable voice.
