SSX ? It's better than that!, 29 Aug 2002
Having never played the original SSX game - I have little knowledge of how EA have improved the game. I do know that the new features on this game are: Surround sound, New Levels, New Players, and new Game Play elements. Presentation/Visuals
The animation for this game is amazing - with full on facial features and extra detail to outfits and boards, the boarders appear fresh. In the game play you can often wander off piste, until the game places you back on track, the mountain is not off limits. Sometimes you get the odd clipping, or the refreh rate occasionally falters but it is eye candy at it's best. There are 10 levels each one offering shortcuts, huge drops and vast open spaces with a great emphasis on detail. One of my favourite details are the snow tracks which trail behind you, perfect! Game Play/Playability
I have had the game for 2 weeks now and I have only played with 4 characters, there are 12 characters in all, each of them distinguished from the other boarders in style, personality and playability. To progress to the unlocked boarders you have to play one of the four boarders offered at the beginning of the game. My favourite character is Psymon, his celebrity voice over is "Jim Rose" (look it up!) - he is what you would call "A PHREAK" he loves pain, one of his catchphrases (when he falls) being "Who cares!?! I'm a nihilist!!!" , in his UBER club gear, with his many tattoos and spiky hairdo make him one of the coolest boarders. There are several play modes to the game -
1. Freeride (1 player, self explanitory)
2. Single Race mode
This is where you can time race - and beat your previous records.
3. World Circuit - Showoff Mode
This is where you progress through the different levels using your skills to gain points to win medals.
4. World Circuit - Race mode
You against all the other boarders, using your wit, skill and control, push or race your way to victory.
5. 2 Player
Play against an opponent.
6. Trick Book
Fill your trick book up to earn extra play modes - new outfits, boards and ranking. Sound
This is where I imagine the Surround sound would come in handy. I dont currently have surround sound - if I did I would be able to hear Run DMC, Several Voices, Birds, Crowds and Helicopters in full force, However! - with my miniscule speakers I still get sound satisfaction every time I hear "Its tricky, It's Tricky". Overall
The game is annoyingly addictive. Annoying because when you get to be a master and you want to get that LAST gold it can be infuriating when you miss 1 grind. Addictive because you wont be going to bed till 3am in the morning and your neighbours will hate you because of the constant "Its Tricky" or "Yeah Baby" booming from your speakers. You'll be playing it for ages, and when your done - there will always be those damn records!
