Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In the PlayStation 2's first few months there were only a few standout games; one of them, SSX, brought snowboarding to people who didn't even like snowboarding. Now, GameCube owners get a new reason to stay indoors during the cold winter--and summer--months. SSX Tricky is its name, and it more than lives up to the moniker.

SSX Tricky removes two characters from the original PS2 game and adds five new ones and adds two new race locations--Garibaldi and Alaska--to the already beefed up World Circuit. Features have also been added to the older tracks, effectively making them new again. Tricky improves the graphics a bit and refines the controls. The game also tweaks the basic gameplay by letting you upgrade your boarder's stats in races, but also forcing you to attempt and master the show-off mode as well. And they went a long way toward improving the challenge by evening out the learning curve. The first game tended to be a cakewalk until the later races in each set; this time your rivals get more intense and aggressive depending upon the lap you're taking.

Personality is everything--not only in terms of voice acting, but also in how you treat the other riders. The game has three basic attitudes in regard to you. If you block and attack characters too much, they'll remember it and actively seek you out. If you help one or two of them they become your allies, warning you of danger or fending off attackers.

In many ways SSX Tricky is only an upgrade of the previous game, but if you don't own a PS2 this is as good as snowboarding gets on the 'Cube for the time being. If you do own a PS2 and SSX, what's been added doesn't look like enough to equal buying the game all over again. But the changes are deep enough to delight even fans who are tired of, or have mastered, the first game. Maybe that's the most impressive über-trick of them all. --Bob Andrews

5.0 out of 5 stars SSX Tricky better than XBOX? Yes!, 20 Jul 2002
By Wilfried (Turnhout Belgium) - See all my reviews
SSX Tricky whas one of the launch titles for the Playstation 2 that had an enormous success, due to its intuitive gampeplay and to be simple SSX Tricky whas one of the best PS2 titles available back then. Now we see a conversion on Nintendo's Gamecube and XBOX. What the big suprise is is that the XBOX version is a real letdown. The visuals are not what it supposed to be and the gameplay is full of bugs! The Gamecube however is far much better, no slowdown, very fast loading times and the gameplay is what it should be, sensetive and fun! Ok, it is a conversion of the PS2 game but with a little more extra's, more courses, storymode (sort of) and the gamepplay is realy ramped up! If you have no Playstation 2 and only have a Gamecube and an XBOX - like me :) - and you are realy fond of this type of game then i can recommend you to buy this Gamecube conversion of SSX Tricky instantly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Elise appeal, 16 Jul 2002
I am 34 and don't usually buy bmx/skateboard/snowboard style games, but I was looking for a killer game for my new gamecube and I remembered seeing SSX at a games store in Reykjavik a few months ago (presumably the PS2 version) and it stood out to me.

I've been playing for a week now and I'm very impressed. The whole package of graphics, sound and presentation is very slick and the learning curve seems about right. After a few feeble first attempts where I fell over a lot and failed to pull off any tricks, a visit to the tutorial screens soon got me going. The first time I pulled off an uber-trick I whooped out loud, even my wife is playing it and she normally shows no interest at all.

There are a good array of riders, boards, outfits and courses. A fair percentage need unlocking, but the vast variety means that every time you play you unlock something new, so you don't get frustrated.

In short, if you know you like this kind of thing you'll love it. If you're not so sure, give it a go, you might surprise yourself. It's sick (apparently). ;-)

Strangely i LOVE this SSX game but really don't like any of the others in the series. I think its because this one doesnt take itself seriously so it really is fun to play. Read more
