Amazon.co.uk Review
In 1985 Cocoon was a significant trend-bucker amongst summer blockbusters. Whereas other genre efforts were devised to lure a teenage audience into FX extravaganzas, this looked like one for their grandparents. Except that it turned out to be a gentle, affecting tale for all ages. Adapted from David Saperstein's novel, director Ron Howard took great delight in focusing on family relationships and the encroachment of old age (themes that reappeared in nearly all his work from here on).

The plot is rather surreal in summary: a group of Florida OAPs befriend aliens in next-door's swimming pool and are rejuvenated to youthful well-being. It's in the FX and characterisations that the story comes alive. Both were acknowledged with Academy Awards; with Don Ameche's supporting role deserving praise for more than just the moment when he does some bodypopping on the dance floor. Wilford Brimley is the real star, a bluff old codger wanting to do right by everyone. Steve Guttenberg provides comic support and allows for a little non-wrinkly nudity with foxy space gal Kitty (Tahnee Welch). ILM's visuals remain polished and inspired, but never allowing us to lose sight of the characters basking in their dazzle. --Paul Tonks

DVD Description
Long before A Beautiful Mind was winning Oscars for director Ron Howard, he was hitting box office gold with Cocoon. A light-hearted science-fiction tale featuring 1980s stars Steve Guttenburg and Jessica Tandy. Cocoon tells the tale of a retirement community who discover the secret of youth in the swimming pool of a local home.

4.0 out of 5 stars One from my childhood..., 15 April 2002

If you don't want to read the following review - Here's the short version -

Cocoon is great!

- for those of you that do, read on...

Cocoon is so well known that I think it's pointless to recount the plot, although what there is of it is faintly nonsensical (involving OAP's, aliens and Steve Guttenburg). What makes this film great however, is the wonderfully warm and enthusiastic interplay between the old cronies - Hume Cronyn, Wilford Brimley, Jessica Tandy and Don Ameche all turning in excellent performances.

Ron Howard's sci-fi tale is engaging, sweet and funny leaving you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fountain of youth, 12 Jan 2002

Too many stars to mention in this almost two hour gem. Senior citizens rule in this film with great material from Ron Howard (Director). It's a sunny film with lots of laughs and a plot to keep you interested to the end. Don Ameche won best supporting actor for this film.
