Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance brings the MK series a new 3-D fighting engine, adds tons of features and extras, and still offers up classic gameplay.

This instalment features a 3-D battle system that still manages to maintain a 2-D feel. For example, pushing up on your controller makes you sidestep your opponent's attacks yet it also allows you to jump in the air by tapping up direction. A revamped fighting system offers up three different fighting styles for each fighter (one includes a weapon technique). The multiple styles provide countless variations of attacks for any given fighter. Different combinations of punches and kicks allow can be combined for very lengthy and powerful chain attacks similar to the Mortal Kombat of old. Fatalities are also back and are rich in graphic representation.

New fighters join the cast of old favourites such as Sonya, Kano, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Jax, Cyrax, Kung Lao, Kitana, Quan Chi, Reptile, and Shang Tsung. The lavish environments surround your fighters with animated backgrounds and rich skylines. On some levels there are even breakable objects and hazards that you can interact with, such as pools of acid--the perfect landing place for a thrown opponent.

In addition to regular modes of gameplay (arcade, versus, etc.), there is an option called Konquest mode. This mode allows you to learn more about fighting styles, read up on each character's personal history, and gain "Koins". The koins can then be spent in the "Krypt" allowing you to unlock a host of new characters, costumes, and early concept drawings. The additional content offered with this title is plentiful and yet it manages to also fit in special movies of "The Making of Deadly Alliance" and "The History of Mortal Kombat".

!!GET OVER HERE!! I`ve been playing beat em ups for 16 years, back to the days of Ye Ar Kung-fu and the 1st Streefighter game and have finished all I`ve played with multiple characters. I found DOA on the xbox dull unresponsive and the combo chains illogical and was very disapointed, no decent beat em ups for the xbox! Then MK;DA came out and kicked its arse, the back grounds (particularly the unlockable ones) are a match for DOA and can be more useful tactically, the character animation far more fluid and lifelike each impact is more satifying. All the combos flow properly and can be shortened or lengthened depending on your skill to fool your opponent, every character has a brilliant set of moves within their 3 styles which you can flow between seemlessly and ending a bout with a fatality is always cool. This is brilliant game on par with Soul Caliber and more satisfying than TK3. Miss it and miss out!

Dont get me wrong this game is excellent, it has extremelly good graphics, a good story, loads of thing to unlock and a good selection of characters.

The down points are that gameplay seems to be a bit button bashing at times and it is slower than i would prefer it to be. The basic idea is to take each character (around 25 after youve unlocked them) through a selection of missions, gaining "Koins" with which you can purchase "Koffins" at the "krypt" along the way. There are 676 koffins, and opening them all will take you a very long time. (Ive played it for a week and have unlocked about 30)

Difficulty- At first it is very easy, but as you progress and get to the higher missions it becomes almost impossible.

The gore is unbelievable, and take the 18 rating on the game very seriously, For example, one of the fatalities (a special move at the end of a fight) shows a man plung his fist in to another guys stomach, wriggle around a bit and rip out the mans skeleton, with all the blood and gore attached to it.

You get three fight styles 2 hand to hand and 1 weaponry (eg karate, judo, ninja sword) you switch between each in a fight, if you hold a weapon you can dish out more damage but it makes you vunerable and weaker.

sadly there is no tag option in the game, but there is a very good arcade mode and quest mode.

overall i was slightly dissapointed its not quite as playable as Dead or Alive 3, but if you need a new fighting game or are a fan of the series then i recommend getting it. It is an awsome game.

In first place, I must say that i've always been a fan of fighting games and, therefore, of MK. The first one was excellent, a true revolution in it's area. The second one was also good, but from there on, Midway seemed to be forgetting something. They created games, but the true spirit (if you can call it that) of the MK was lacking.
As you might have already guessed, I had great expectations towards this new edition. But were they fulfilled?
Well, first of all, I must say that the only thing in common with the other MK games are some characters and the concept of fatalities. In the rest, it is a whole new game.
This time, each of the fighters comes provided with three different martial arts, one if which with a weapon (highly inspirated in the highly known "Soul Calibur"). Swords, nunchakus, Kali sticks, it is all there. I must say it's an interesting characteristic, which will make you play longer, in order to master them all.
As for game modes, we'll find some new features. The most interesting one is the Krypt. This is a room with over 200 coffins!, each of them with a nice surprise (which can go from sketches of the characters to secret characters). But don't think you'll just open them and "here, is this what you wanted?". For these surprises, you'll have to work hard, in the Arcade mode (where you can collect coins in the mini-games which appear after a certain number of matches), and in the Konquest mode (which contains over 200 missions, each of them rewarded at the end with the same coins).
As for characters, you'll find 21. At the beginning you'll only be able to choose between 12, and the rest you'll have to get from the mentioned game modes.
Moving on to the graphics area, they are good, in fact, I think I may say they are the best in the MK series till today, athough they still don't achieve the quality of Dead or Alive 3.
However, I must say that I miss the digitalized characters. This was always a special feature of MK, and I really don't know why Midway decided, already in MK4, to change them to 3D. As a consequence, the fatalities end up not being so real as before, not causing so much impact.
As a final word, I would just like to say that this game would get 4 stars if it would have another name. In that case, it would be a very good game. But in the context of MK, it's not what I had expected. Nevertheless, it is still a good game and all real fighting games fans should get their hands on it. Especially when the Xbox isn't exactly the console with most offers in this area. However, if you're not such a huge fan of this type of games, you'd rather think twice before buying it.
