Synopsis
With THE TOWN IS QUIET, French writer-director Robert Guediguian (MARIUS AND JEANNETTE) brings the bustling, culturally diverse landscape of modern Marseilles to startling life. Opening with an extended pan of the Mediterranean city, Guediguian ingeniously prepares the viewer for the sprawling tale that is about to unfold. Gradually, a revolving cast of characters is introduced, including: Michele (Ariane Ascaride), a struggling fish monger who cares for her heroin-addicted daughter, Fiona (Julie-Marie Parmentier); Paul (Jean-Pierre Darroussin), a former dock worker who has turned to driving a taxi; Abderramane (Alexandre Ogou) and Viviane (Christine Brucher), two apparent opposites who form an unlikely relationship; and Gerard (Gerard Meylan), a quiet bar owner with a mysterious connection to Michele. By the time the film builds to its somber, tragic conclusion, each individual is forced to confront his or her current situation, sparking a series of epiphanies that no one will ever forget.
Guediguian's film is the work of a truly gifted storyteller. Juggling at least four major plotlines, he brings his characters together naturally, without ever forcing it. Ascaride, Darroussin, and Meylan are standouts in the superb cast, actors who don't need to speak to convey the hidden sadness that lies just beneath the surface.
This film was screened as part of the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2001 festival organized by The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bleak view of Marseille?, 16 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This is a very, very good film. The opening pan around the main habour in Marseille is perfectly shot giving an instant insight into what is now quite an impoverished town. The films delves into the lives of a few local families who each have their own problems, whether they be parents wanting their son to find love and settle down or a mother attempting to help her drug addicted daughter.

It is impossible to say how you will be feeling when you finish watching this film as the last fifteen minutes really play havoc with your emotions. As for the rest of the movie, this film takes a deep look at the various lengths people will go to to justify their existence, and the existence of their nearest and dearest. A near perfect film from man dubbed 'the French Ken Loach', it may leave you feeling depressed or slightly uplifted. Either way, if you watch this you will definitely not feel short changed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Marseille symphony, 13 Jul 2008
By P. C. Reynell (Bradford UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After the impressive opening pan it is soon clear that Marseille is anything but peaceful. Dockworkers are being laid off. One buys a taxi with his father and tries to make ends meet. Another lapses into alcohol and violence while his long-suffering wife works as a fish-sorter and tries to look after her drug-addicted daughter and baby grand-daughter and even reverts to prostitution to pay for drugs. Eventually she is driven to kill her daughter with an overdose. We are introduced to the immigrant influx and the National Front backlash.

As a single thread of optimism a talented boy opens the film playing his keyboard to collect money for a piano and closes it playing the classics on his new grand piano in the street to entertain the people. A film to remember.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and intellectual, 5 April 2006
By A Customer
I found this film quite intruiging and thought provoking dealing with race, class, and poverty and the social and moral barriers they inflict. It was however quite intellectual and obscure, some of the characters meaning I missed completely.
As individual thoughts and issues within the film I enjoyed watching it, but as a whole I think the overall plot and theme went over my head.
