Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Living With the Past is a beautifully packaged and thoughtfully programmed compilation of recent live recordings of songs across the span of Jethro Tull’s sizeable catalogue.

Their origins as a blues band with folk leanings made them a welcome alternative to the power trio back in the late 1960s. That period is covered on "Some day the sun won’t shine for you", recorded by the original band when they reunited in 2002. Their commercial high point was Aqualung, as brilliant and lasting a statement as any in classic rock. On this album recordings of utterly respectful versions, the line-up includes "Locomotive Breath" and the title track.

Elsewhere Ian Anderson is joined by a string quartet for new takes on some early and obscure single sides. The bands penchant for long-form rock-operatic fare, that put them in a progressive cul-de-sac alongside Yes and Genesis, lost them critical support but not their legion of fans.

The fans know that this band still has its chops, in particular, longstanding guitarist Martin Barre is among the most underrated of classic rock axemen and this fine live album is as much his as it is Anderson’s. --Rob Stewart

CD Description

Not to be confused with 1972's LIVING IN THE PAST, this PAST is a collection of live recordings from 2001, largely taken from a performance at London's Hammersmith Apollo in November of that year. What makes this particular live performance noteworthy is that they bring back several original members - Mick Abrahams, Glen Cornick, Clive Bunker, and Dave Pegg- for guest appearances in something that will surely delight longtime followers of the band. And on that level, this works quite well. Perhaps the sound is a little too clean, with each instrument clearly defined and detailed, and perhapsthe performance leans more toward the professional than theinspired, but it's enjoyable all the same, proving that Tull remained a strong live band well over 30 years after theirheyday.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Tull CD is Simply Fabulous, 26 April 2002
I think that this is the greatest Tull live cd ever. It features songs from concerts given over the past couple of years in various places around the world. It gives the listener a very good idea of how the band is "living with their past" by having to attempt to mix their newer material with their older classic tunes. This cd succeeds on all levels. The liner notes were also very informative and useful although I would have liked to have seen more attention paid to Ray Davies in the description of some of the older songs. Still, this is a must have cd for both casual and long-time fans of this great group.

2.0 out of 5 stars new tull album NOT simply fabulous..., 9 May 2002
By "ki014c1970" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
It is difficult to know how to accurately review this album. As a live album, it is fine, no, actually very good. The performances are good in comparison to many live albums. As a rock album it moves along nicely and generally speaking it is not bad. But, when one compares it to other Tull albums, a sorry situation appears.
Tull have produced several other live albums in their long and often brilliant career, and this one simply displays a band who used to be great, but arn't any more. Much missed is Ian Anderson's previous strong, leathery voice. After voice problems experienced in the late eighties, his voice now sounds thin and rasping, and some high notes sound really difficult for him to achieve. This problem can be disgused in a studio recording, but in a live situation it sounds uncomfortable to listen to on rockier numbers.
Martin Barre learnt in the early to mid eighties how to make his guitar sound like all american rock guitars do, with harmonics left right and centre. This is fine if american rock is your thing, but to me Tull were always very English, and Mr. Barre's effect pedals make Tull now sound at times like diluted A.O.R. Sad but true.
Some of the album has Dave Pegg's fabulous rhythmic yet melodic bass playing, but most feature Jonathan Noyce who sound like a dull plodder in comparison.
Last winge: the keyboards on some songs (especially when mimicing strings) sound like a cheap synthersiser, the type your cousin might get for Christmas. So, Andy Gidding, where are the organs, where are the mellotrons, and where are the other old, yet aurally superior instruments that used to add to Tull's sound?
On the plus side, the quiter acoustic songs are a welcome against the rock songs, the flute still sounds excellent, the mandolins and Doane Perry's drums sound fab, but if you want a good Tull album, try Benefit, Aqualung, Living in the past or Songs from the Wood. Perhaps visuals would make this performance better and prove me wrong? I am told there is a DVD coming out soon. Watch this space...

1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Utterly Pointless Live Album, 9 Jun 2002
By A Customer
For one of the best live bands in the world ever, to release a live album that is little more than pristine live versions of studio tracks with a few odds and sods and curios thrown in for good measure is a crying shame. One star for Sweet Dream and Roots to Branches. The versions of the other classics are so pedestrian its unbelievable. What this fan really wants is some not studio perfect recordings from the mid seventies when Tull were at their peak. ELP set the example with the Manticore Vaults. Think about it.
