Product Description
The Panasonic NV DS30 DV Camcorder offers high-performance Digital Video at an affordable price. Packed with Panasonic's advanced digital video technology, the compact DS30 gives you top picture quality and easy operation. The DS30 features an 800k pixel CCD and offers DV In/Out terminals for easy editing on your PC.

The DS30 features a 10x optical, variable speed, zoom lens, complemented by digital zoom to provide up to 500x magnification. This is assisted by the Super Image Stabiliser and Zoom microphone. 0-lux nightview, the video light, backlight compensation and a long battery life ensure that you can capture the pictures you want, when you want. You can preview your filming on the 2.5" colour LCD display, or via the B/W electronic viewfinder. The DS30 also features digital still capabilities, including progressive Photoshot (tape) and continuous digital Photoshot. Audio dubbing, a range of digital effects, smart wind cut and five-mode programme AE can all be added to the impressive feature set of this camcorder.

The DS30 is supplied with an AC Adaptor, Lithium battery pack (800 mAh), shoulder strap, AV cable and infrared remote.

I've been looking to get started with video editing on my PC and was looking for a suitable camcorder. From my research I knew that I needed a model with both DV-in and DV-Out if I was going to be able to get my edited footage back onto tape. My other big consideration was budget, as manufacturer's seem to charge a premium for DV-In and omit it from their cheaper models.
The DS-30 was a perfect solution for me. It was the one model with DV-In from a respectable brand that was within my budget. I've been very happy with the performance so far. I'm not going to go through all the specs here - You can read that anyway. What I will say, is that the camcorder is simple to setup, easy to use, well built. It has all the basic set of features you need and I'm yet to find a fault with any of them. The manual is comprehensive, which was important for me not having had a camcorder before.
The quality of footage is stunning. I was a bit concerned when I first downloaded onto my PC as the full screen footage I was editing looked to have lots of artefacts. However, when I reloaded it back onto tape after editing, hooked it up to my widescreen TV my jaw dropped. The quality was like watching Sky Digital. I suspect this is the case with most digital camcorders and nothing unique to the Panasonic model, but nonetheless, I can't recommend this camcorder highly enough. It's not the smallest around, or the flashest, but it has everything you need.

I used this camera whilst on holiday in States and it is great.
Its image stabilising and light weight make it very easy to use. Lux setting and light also make it useful in darker conditions, such as nights out.
DV-in and -out mean that computer editing is possible without the use of additional leads to connect PC to video.

All in all a great buy. One of the best in its price range.

You won't do better than this for the price; it was good value when it came out about around April 2002 and is more so now that the price has dropped. There are more compact and durable cameras avaliable for not too much more outlay, but this has features that are lacking in most other cameras below the £1000 mark.
There's not much I can add to the other reviews and to my own review for the NV-DS29 (identical to this except for the DV-in facility) except to say that I had a technical problem or two when I first tried to record back into the camera from the PC; it didn't seem to want to do that one thing - the only reason I upgraded from the 29! However a bit of trial and error soon sorted it out - My PC seems to prefer the camera to be plugged in and switched on when I boot up - so, not a fault in the camera - just one of those techno - things that plague modern life-the price we pay for nice toys I suppose!
