3.0 out of 5 stars "Casablanca" - Mike Heron's famous lost album, 4 Jun 2003

Famous it might be - and it has certainly been extremely difficult to find until this CD release - but ultimately the Mike Heron album (originally released on the ill-fated Casablanca label and generally known by that name) is a bit of a disappointment. The songs themselves are typically well-crafted (Mike has always been something of a perfectionist), but the production is somewhat overdone. The overall sound is BIG, brassy, loud, and lacking the subtlety usually associated with the good Mr Heron. He was obviously aiming for Stateside success with this finely polished record, but perhaps he would have been better advised to continue working the hard-rock vein he had been exploring with Reputation since the breakup of the Incredible String Band. Individual songs which stand out include the up-tempo "Treat Your Woman Like a Star" (good advice), "Blackfoot Side" and "Mexican Girl" which turned up years later on Mike's "Mystics" CD. One for the collection, but more for its curiosity value than anything.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Heron and Dando Show - Live in the Studio!, 5 Jul 2002
By S. GODFREY "Stuart" (Risca, South Wales) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It may not be exactly "live", but this lovely mini-album has a spontaneity which puts it on a par with Mike's much-loved "Conflict of Emotions". A couple of new songs, but mostly familiar material revisited, the feel is relaxed and warm, but Mike's singing is so assured and Lawson's keyboard playing is so masterful (check out his star turn on "Residential Boy") that the result is thoroughly satisfying. These songs were a real delight for Incredible String Band fans when the duo performed them in the surprise "Heron Spots" during last year's ISB concerts. "Singing the Dolphin" and "Residential Boy" are fine reminders of what a good album "Reputation" is, while "Worlds They Rise and Fall" and especially "Don't Kill it Carol" from Mike's AOR days are gutsy versions delivered with verve and panache. The two new songs "The Falling in Love" and "Take a Breath With Me" are very much in the classic Heron mould - deceptively simple and instantly likeable, they grow with every hearing. The hidden track is just there for laughs (literally) with Mike and Lawson cracking up over mistaken lyrics. So, what we have is a snapshot of two fine musicians working together and having fun with some good songs...little of the polish of a full-blown album, but an honest document and a very enjoyable one.
