Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Spy Hunter is a game almost unique in our time: not only a genuinely top-quality PS2 game, but also a superb update of a retro classic--an unlikely achievement, of the same sort as a row of Oscars above Keanu Reeves' mantelpiece.

The original Spy Hunter was a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up from the early 80s that was inspired by the Lotus Esprit sequence from The Spy Who Loved Me. This sequel manages to update all the elements of the original in superb 3-D graphics-o-vision yet still maintains the same manic arcade spirit.

The basic gameplay involves you driving your gadget-stuffed spy car (which can also transform into a boat) through one of 14 different courses attempting to complete a variety of different goals, such as blowing up prototype helicopters and defusing bombs. You only have to complete one goal to exit the course, but completing additional goals is the only way to access subsequent levels.

Spy Hunter is unquestionably the best marriage of a driving game and shoot-'em-up ever--and considering how many games have attempted this in the past that's no small compliment. Shallow it might be, but this is great fun. --David Jenkins

Product Description

Newly optimized for GameCube, Spy Hunter is a mission-based combat racing game based on the arcade classic. It puts you behind the wheel of the G-6155 Interceptor, the ultimate counterintelligence prototype vehicle. It's turbocharged and ready to go with 845 horsepower for lightning-fast speed. That's not all--there's an arsenal of futuristic weaponry and morphing abilities that turn the car into a speedboat, jet ski, or motorcycle. Basically, it's everything you need to undertake 14 high-adrenaline missions on wheels.

Should you choose to accept these daring reconnaissance missions, you'll travel to Panama, England, the Middle East, Venice, and other exotic locations around the world. Each location is rendered with a high degree of realism and provides recognizable landmarks and scenery. Throughout, you're the hunter as well as the hunted, pursued by enemies over land, on water, and in the air. Your mission is to take on NOSTRA, an out-of-control multinational corporation headed by an evil madman who's threatening the world.

As Spy Hunter, you must always be ready for heavily armed enemy vehicles that lurk around every corner and strike at the first site of the Interceptor. But you have a steady supply of weapons trucks that load you up with machine guns, missiles, lasers, and counterattack weapons such as oil slicks, smoke screens, and cluster mines. Each successful attack gets you one step closer to revealing who Spy Hunter is and what he's ultimately after.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great remake of an arcade claasic, 18 Jan 2003
Firstly, do NOT call this a racing game. If it was a racing game, you would be against one or more opponents trying to get to the finsh line. This is the only game fully in a car where you are not racing, save Crazy Taxi. It brings together cars with shoot-em-ups. If you can't decide whether to buy Nightfire or Crazy Taxi, buy this. It has an amazing driving simulator which delivers pinpoint steering and realistic acceleration and braking. You must test your driving skills as well as accuracy to avoid numerous civilian casualties. You must place trackers on various things and avoid damaging them.

The system is simple. Complete objectives in levels by doing various tasks. You can unlock levels once you have completed enough objectives. However, you must have completed the primary objective on the previous level to be able to play the level.

Unlock all the objectives on a level (at once) and you will be able to play two-player. So far, I have only unlocked the second two-player level, which is called Chicken Hunter. Destroy more chickens than your opponent to win! If there are any "player blow up the other player" levels, I don't know.

The graphics are some of the smoothest you'll find in a car game. You can see the trees and clouds in a reflection off of your boot. The car leaves skidmarks if you turn just a tad too hard. You can see as far as the next corner which, in some cases, is quite a way away.

The longevity is great. Some objectives easy, some are hard. You can do the easy ones, get on to the next level, continue, until you find you don't have enough objectives to progress. So, you go back to the start, do what you thought were hard objectives, and get onto the next level. Pure genius.

The car, a G-6155 Interceptor can be driven onto water and transformed into a boat. It boasts a variety of weapons either way, both offensive and defensive. In case you take more than 50% damage, the car can take no more as most of the bodywork come off and the car/boat becomes a motorbike/raft. The only downside to the change is that the motorbike cannot use defensive weapons. But one question, Midway, when will the G-6155 be on sale to the public?

The old Weapons Van is still in the game. It gives you a chance to repair and re-ammo. Also, because the car has an ability to change into a boat, there is a Weapons Boat which performs the same duties.

The only reason I could think someone would not want to buy this game is if they are one of those who think that cars cause the breakdown of society. If you are not one of those people, I suggest you buy this game now, invent a Cube game copier, and give us all one for free. Go on, why not?

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good...but not that good, 18 Jul 2002
Original Spyhunter, an 80's classic vertical scrolling game that could keep you hooked for days. New Spyhunter, a 3-D mission based driving game that will keep you entertained for hours (well a few anyway)

The gameplay is simple. You are given a primary mission, and a list of secondary mission to complete in a location. These range from destroying a helicoptor, to attaching a set number of homing devices, or picking up hidden objects. To progress through the game, you must complete a set number of these missions. (For example, to move on to location two, you have to complete at least 4 of the 8 missions in location 1). With 14 locations to visit, potentially this is a game with a long future...but there is a problem...

The resolution of the graphics is not exactly perfect. At some points I thought I was back on my Commodore 64 !! Screens filled with other vehicles caused 'slow-down' and explosions look like they were made out of lego. The cut scene animations really show up the lack of high-res and I found myself stopping them before they had finished.

HOWEVER...You'll notice I didn't give this 1 star. The reason is..gameplay. Despite the poor graphics and despite the dissapointing cut-scenes, there is a very playable game in there trying to get out. The controls are almost instictive, making this a 'pick-up-and-play' game. The missions in each location have a nice difficulty curve, with one or two being easy enough to complete at the first attempt, and one or two needing quite a few tries to complete. The locations are nicely varied and offer a range of driving surfaces, and there is a sense of speed about the whole thing.

This is definatley a game to have a look at, but I would find it hard to reccomend paying full price for it. I'm not a fan of renting games, but in this case that might be the best option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and exciting!, 1 May 2009

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This is an exciting Game if nothing else.

I found this Game very entertaining, but as regards 'success', I did not do well... However, I am someone who accepts that as much as I delight in Video Games, I am not good at them, and so from that perspective, it would be tricky to say whether or not the Game is very good or very bad from my Review, but I do suspect that many would have managed to complete this Game and enjoyed it.

Try as I might; I did not manage two of the tasks on the first level, but as I'd completed the majority of them, I was able to progress to the next level which was good, and stopped me getting bored by having to attempt the same tasks over and over. However, I'm still yet trying to get beyond this second level, as the area seems so incredibly large compared to the first, with many more routes to choose from which can complicate issues when the pressure is on. The time given is so little, and the tasks just too difficult for me...

Anyone who loves travelling at high speeds (on Video Games) and smashing into stuff and seeing a lot of action, then they will just love this! Those who enjoy a challenge, will love it too!

I see that this Title is available on several Platforms, but as I always say; buy GameCube - stay loyal to Nintendo who gave us the best and earliest Games Consoles and still manufacture the best quality stuff after all these years!
